Really, REALLY????????people need to be told not to overload their soak away a in this weather? I haven't done a wash for a week, I'm not flooded, I just don't care to be (no danger here, though tough on the cake) or in creating extra water though my clean 'grey water discharge ' (or soak away for those still on old money when they spend a penny) cause those down the line.
You are right lir. Once upon a time we did the washing once a week and now we wear clothes once for a few hours and they go in the washing machine and it runs every day. Well some people do that.
Having lived in a flooding city, it is a bit more complex on the ground.
When I was a student, one area flooded every few years. We all knew not to rent there. So they sorted out the flood protection and with sandbags that held by 1 cm on the worst floods.
However up stream grass land was ploughed and land that was ploughed in spring was now down to winter wheat etc, etc. The river level in the city was higher, which meant that the water levels in the tributaries rose because they could no longer empty into the main river. So three miles up stream on the tributaries areas that had been safe started to flood frequently.
And the housing at the upstream end of the city started to flood as well.
It has needed discussions about re-instating flood meadows up stream and some seriously expensive engineering to sort it all out (so far).If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
I went to uni in a flooding area.
. I had to submit a marked paper by giving it to some one in kayak once!!!!
Its vastly more complicated than any single action. Ultimately nothing can stop rain falling, not this mild weather and odd fronts creating rain, rains rain, but we can all do the tiny bits to minimise it. The idea that this was an extreme reaction was a bit of a surprise to me. One of those times I suppose I feel very 'un British' though I think it might be 'unmodernised' or even 'uncivilised' in truth! I'm used to storms and there impact, places I grew up droughts were droughts.....floods and bad meant no drinking water at all, till the weather was good enough for a container ship to come in. So to me.....staving down on the washing and bathing a bit seems a fairly minimal effort.
Otoh, my dogs' beds stink, and washing them would also me high on my personal agenda otherwise!0 -

Hope tomorrow is a better day for you LIRIt is a good idea to be alone in a garden at dawn or dark so that all its shy presences may haunt you and possess you in a reverie of suspended thought.
