I accept we'll lose them to predation. Its natural. I cannot accept keeping them in concentration camps. I won't keep my horses in tiny paddocks or stabled twenty four seven either. If I were going to do that, I might as well just....buy eggs tbh. We all have different motivations, And mine is to see things living closer to how they are meant to. Its certainly not to shovel poop:rotfl:
Agreed about locking them up, but I don't think ours are kept in unnatural conditions and they seem to be fairly safe. Virtually all of them could fly out at any time if they wanted to.
That's what I meant.
That said, our long term aim is to double the space available to our hens. At present, there are just too many other things vying for our time and £££.Better_Days wrote: »
So Davesnave is that the conclusion of 'polegate' now?
Err......sorry, don't understand that one. :undecided
We don't have any say in this upgrade of the line from 2 to 3 phase. It's possible someone further on wants 3 phase and we 'benefit' because we're en route. (We'd only benefit if we decided to rent out our top field edge for a small solar development or needed 3 phase for an enterprise in the barn.)
In the immediate future it just means an extra line and one or two larger poles.
The pole by the road isn't in yet, so I'm not sure how tall it will be, but the new one in the top field is about 6' taller than the one it replaces.
Call me mad, but if I were spanning a small valley with cables, I'd put the tallest pole in the dip. Not this lot; the one down by the bottom hedge/stream is about the same height as the original, so the lines will go uphill/downhill!0 -

Alfie I would absolutely love them, if that's ok...
I your LL has either taken legal advice and been told outright they were in the wrong, so they are panicking, or he thinks by paying you quickly he will butter you up ( so to speak)
Davesnave I suffer with low blood pressure, but this was different.. I wasn't dizzy, just shaking.... and out of breath...
LIR so sorry about the chooks... it is hard trying to find a happy balance between letting the chooks wonder around freely, and protecting them form preditors..Work to live= not live to work0 -
Watching sales carefully atm as we may want to cut back a little, it's gone a bit too well lately.
.
Too well, rhiwie? Ours are going well......but apart from having too many parcels to wrap, I don't think they're going so well as to need slowing down, lol.......mind you DH did just sell something within 13 minutes of listing it - paid £20 this afternoon and sold for £100Mortgage-free for fourteen years!
Over £40,000 mis-sold PPI reclaimed0 -
Still reading about you guys. I'm sooo tired. Can barely keep my eyes open.
Site visit with the QS went as well as could be expected. He reminded us that overall, it's a really good job and an excellent result. I'm afraid I am very up and down mood wise though because the build has taken it's toll on my enthusiasm and motivation. I don't think the time of year helps, either. I always get a little SAD. I'd love to hibernate for January.
So sorry about the chooks, LIR. I'm definately in your court in the way I like to keep my poultry. I just love them living as natural a life as possible. I know this means they are likely to be taken by a fox at some point though.... What to do? I hope the geese may put the fox off a bit and we will get a dog in due course. I was thinking today that I would be heartbroken if my two little bantams were taken. I'm way more attached to some than others.
We now have two male birds. One a !!!! probably coming into his fourth season and another born last year. I let the cockerel free range for the first time today with his wee harem of two pullets. there has been a lot of argey bargeying, but no blood lost! The old hens were having none of himI say we've two males. There are also the Brahmas. Out of 4 eggs, 3 are cockerels, but at 4 months old, they take so long to mature that they are like 7 year old boys. Goofy and loveable and they still adore their mum (me). They're definately not thinking about mating yet.

I can see that, alfie, especially where the lines leave our land and cross the B class road, but having one short pole at the lowest point still makes no sense! We will be using machinery beside that pole and it will be a 'splitter pole' where two lines meet.
I don't mind, 'cos it's less obtrusive.....:D
.....but on the other hand, I'd like my lines to be level!:(

If it helps, I'd love to be in your position.:A
There's nothing that really fires us up about building, which is probably why we haven't got far with it yet. Had too much and suffered as kids!
But it has to be done. I'm just dreaming of being on the other side of it......:o0 -

We have done the great bulk of it now, too. There are no more structural things to do. It's just kitting out, which is more money, but we can do it on our own steam and little by little. We are talking hundreds, rather than thousands, of pounds to finish most rooms.
At times I've thought: why the hell did we start this? But even though it's been horrible at times and living in the caravan with three small kids incredibly trying, it's definately worth the pain in the short term for what we have gained in the long term.0 -
Really sorry about the fox LIR.
It's a sickener.
Over East today pricing the rayburn chimney & looking at woodburners. The price of the flue is a bit steep, but the guy who we are going to is really beating everyone else's quotes as we'll recommend.0
