Yey! We went to lottie today! :j OH did more digging out of weeds near the shed - that's his personal weeding place at the mo. I weeded and tried to get out as much couch grass as poss from our biggest rhubarb plant, and before we left OH put a trug over it secured with a brick on top in hopes we can get some forced rhubarb. We'll see! ;)

I did a little more weeding too in mid of plot, near the kale that the %$$%&%^* pigeons have been gobbling. :(

Then we went back to old home which was a bit of a nightmare as had to go in through back door and the wooden steps up to back door are both slimy and rotten. Luckily OH was able to get front door open for me to get out... Otherwise I was saying he had to come back home here and get sleeping bag and light fire there for me to stay! He got a load of boxes out of loft, we'll look at them later in the week hopefully.

Am frozen and knackered now! OH has set heat to come on for longer in old home, it felt so cold and dank, miserable at how it was, still love it as it was our Home for so long. :o

Off to bed I think as hot water bottles will help warm me up! :j

Pleased to hear the move is going well Alfie :D Good for you that you're taking everything you can from the garden, planted in the ground or not ;)

Dave, we also moved a heck of a lot plant-wise in our last two moves - last time was harder as we opted to DIY - first move was around 150 miles (from Hants to Essex) and cost in excess of £4000 - yep, think we were well and truly stitched up there :o

The second move was around 200 miles and basically we couldn't justify spending such a ridiculous amount to have someone do it for us......and, I should add that £4k didn't include a packing service!!!

We had around fifty to sixty outside planters, ranging in size from the small to mahoosive and on the DIY move those and our other garden stuff - including a small *sentry box* type shed - took up a whole 7.5 tonne van :D

Next move I think we'll have to call in Alfie and her mates :rotfl:

BD - we'll definitely be opting for the more neutral Cedral cladding, methinks......I just like the other, more *interesting* colours, lol :D

Davesnave, when even David Austin speakers recommend shovel, pruning a rose I feel guilt free about it not thriving for me. Zepherine has a beautiful name and flower bu t seems to serve simply as a desease refuge,

  • We're off to try and get mistletoe to take in the limes.

    Wish me luck!

    How did you do?

You posted on 26th Dec - which is not the best time of year to plant mistletoe (though it is when everyone thinks about trying it).

Much better to try in late winter/early spring, when the seeds germinate more readily - Feb to early April.

Well, the main thing is its when I could easily get mistletoe seeds!

Tbh I have to admit I haven't checked, though we were talking about it today. :o

What method would you recommend if I've not been successful mistletoe grower? :). I don't have any seeds left to try with in February mind you :rotfl:

Sounds like you're cracking on there Alfie - You'll be jiggered when you do move & won't be able to find owt for months.

Spent the evening listing on the bay so feel crossed eyed at the mo, but pleased I managed it.

Lovely moon-light night out there, but getting colder - the gritters been out & about so must catch the weather forecast.
  • Alfie those roses are stunning!!!!!!

I have some big containers dotted around the place...

When do the cheap shops start having their roses in???

Had a bit of a 'funny turn' yesterday, freightened me a bit... was out the garden trying to start clearing stuff etc, ( wasn't out there long) and I got out of breath REALLY quickly, so I came in, and I was shaking...

I Know I am unfit, BUT I am wondering if all this stress is effecting me too, getting really bad indigestion and heartburn the last few weeks..

The quicker we can get the one side of the house at the ranch done, the better... so we can think about moving up there then... and get this place ready for auction...

The seedlings, if they've grown, will be very tiny now, and remain tiny for the next 12 months, so when you look do look carefully!

I usually advise would-be mistletoe growers to look at the growing advice on Jonathan Briggs' Mistletoe Pages: http://mistletoe.org.uk/homewp/index.php/grow-your-own/how-to-grow-mistletoe/
The advice there debunks the oft-quoted myth of cutting (completely pointless) slits in the bark.

Edited to add: PS Jonathan B is an occasional colleague of mine (we work with mistletoe at Christmas), so I suppose I should declare that for clarity! But I believe his advice is the best around.
  • Mistletoe grower...

I am looking at various little things to do around my smallholding to generate a little income from little things etc..

We have an old cider/crab apple ? tree could we put some seeds on that?

Also if everything went ok... with germination etc in your opinion how long would it take for mistloe on a tree to start being productive enough to get some sort of cash generated from it?

And roughly how much does Mistletoe sell for? per bunch ? and does the bunches go by weight? or what size bunch??

and is it only fruit trees that can be a host?
