We made the most of the gorgeous weather by going for a walk with the sproglets. Straight from our door is a glorious round walk. I total it's about 6 miles but we did half of it in three hours which I thought was pretty good going considering we had two three year olds with us. Many of my friends' kids won't walk anywhere. I felt quite proud of them. We only meandered from the footpath at the point where you had to cross the stream - which was pretty gushing. Instead we climbed over a barbed wire fence. It was less hairy.

I love the permaculture stuff but I suspect in practice, it can be less than productive. I intend to use the main principles supplemented with planting annuals that would otherwise be expensive to buy. My thoughts are now turning to planting. It's really wonderful to have all the free fertiliser in the form of the poultry and old bedding. Quite exciting. I bought a heated propagator last year and failied to use it. I hope to use it this year. A good job that I bought it really as we are now brassic and I couldn't justify shelling out £100 ish for one now :o I also have quite a lot of the books already and I intend to put them to use.

We certainly won't be spending in the sales. There's nothing I want except a house to live in. It's going to be an exceptionally frugal 12 months. We'll need it to recover from the build and have a decent rainy day fund again.

Alf, I saw Beauliu {spelling?} in the news. Looked far worse than Wales. It looks like England has copped it far worse than us.

After some robust discussion we have put a fair few seeds in one lime and none in the other. We can see how successful we are and attack the other next year.

They are absolutely covered in new bud and shoot, The blaze of coral red is almost as violent as the dog wood. Looking up into the rich clear bright blue sky we have today was breathtaking, that coral against blue, but I tried to photo it for you all and it came out distinctly muted :(. Looking down a little, but keeping the blue and coral in eye, you can add the now slightly dulled to mustard yellow of the willows behind. Branches are astounding in their colour aren't they?

There is so much life out in my borders I'm a little concerned. I'm guessing that if this continues the fruit might take another bashing. Speaking of fruit. I need to do my soft fruit pruning.... I could probably whizz through the currant tomorrow.....I didn't do them last year so they are rather leggy, but they were very productive!

also put a pile of the berries where your birds eat [blackbirds etc] cos they poop them out and seeds get onto trees :D even if 2 /100 grow :D:D

Alfie Bimbles ball makes me laugh :rotfl:

I have been quietly scheming and planning what I am going to grow this year and I think the most important things are salad leaves, peas, beans and courgettes. The herb garden and soft fruit will add extra treats I may also pop in another few things but these are my main aims.

We need to replace some of the glass in the greenhouse and to get some pea and bean seeds but that should be our only garden costs. I have bought a sling for Rumlet to go in while I work in the garden :rotfl: figure we should start him off young!

Dave I was looking at that ebay seed seller you recommended before, which pea and bean seeds have you tried?

I've got a bit of a viscous circle going on. I've got hens that aren't laying and haven't laid since May, I suspect its their age. The hens are free range and therefore have access to the veg patch. I've decided that when these hens depart (hope I can still post on here) that I won't be replacing them.

I can't afford to make a hen pen, so do I wait for them to depart or help them on the way so i can use the veg beds?

I don't grow that many peas & beans. I grow the 'Bijou' variety of pea, (Real Seeds) which is a heritage type, and last year I grew a Yellow Wax dwarf bean from Lidl. I don't grow any runner beans 'cos my DW isn't that keen on them. Sorry! :o

    New gaff?...........
