Try chicory and endive - both perform better as the days get shorter and some are very pretty.

Also a lot of the chinese/oriental mustards and leaves (Giant red and mizuma coped with minus 19 here).

    Sow winter spring onions?

Swiss chard might just work. If you have a sheltered spot I have planted Golden Sweet mangetout and kept picking 'til Christmas; the New Year gales shredded them but they were not detered by any number of freezes.

Beets and kales might only provide small leaves for salads and a little greens but worth a try.

Borrow Joy Larkcom's Vegetables and the back there is a short section on growing a salads in Winter.

thanks for the thoughts on step dad, well at 5pm he still hadnt gone down to theatre:mad::mad::mad:,

Alfie they sound fab:T:T:T what do you want for them???

Had a quote today for wooden windows and stable doors:eek::eek::eek::eek: and it wasn't even hard wood:eek::eek::eek::eek:

so will see what the pvc prices are..

Stopped raining here now, the stream on our land was very high today, but it didn't go over the 'bridge' Pig runs were like a swomp, but it will dry out quickly..

LIR... we have rats up the ranch now, I think it is a combination of the pigs and their food, and some land being cleared on the livery across the way... We cant put poison down or traps, as people leave their dogs off the lead, plus there is loads of wildlife around...

I think it just part of owning land and having animals... you will never get rid of them perminantly

stayed up the ranch yesterday/last night Didn't get anything done as it was pisistantly raining...

    That's a great discription CTC.

Hope your dad is doing okay.

New fees announced on Ebay which seem very controversal.

The hen run Dave seems a lot like musical chairs without the chairs. I have a lovely show of your poppies that I threw down with some wild flower seed. The poppies are the most prolific.

r.a.i.n.b.o.w How odd to be turned down by them, I would email them again incase it was a mistake. We use our local freecycle groups a lot.

I've emailed 2 days ago, just after the first rejection. Plus sent a new application. No reply, yet.

If it helps, rainbow, I'm a member of Freegle, which was no bother to join.

Joined and posted a few items 3 days ago. All I have had is 2 bad hingleyish replies to the temperamental TV, one saying if it's a flat screen (it's not!) I should phone him, and another asking if I still had the TV and is it flat screen...

Another problem is my local Freegle only has approx 5% of the member numbers that my local Freecycle has, and gets just 2 posts a day, compared to 80 posts a day in the Freecycle group that I can't get into!
    :(
  • An update to my father's situation: he has now been diagnosed with diabetes and impaired kidney function, both of which could have been prevented had SOMEONE taken his raised fasting blood glucose results seriously 3 years ago! He's been put on 3 different meds and has a diabetes care appointment later this week. I continue to bang my head on my desk.

r.a.i.n.b.o.w :mad::mad::mad::mad: I am hearing more and more of this type of thing happening, a person who buys off me, told me her husband went to the dr over a year ago with blood in his poo, and the locum dr said it was maybe his diet, hard poo's etc, a year later, he owned up to his wife he was still getting blood in his poo, and went back to the see his proper dr, who has sent him for tests. for prostrate cancer..

Step father went into surgery around 7pm last night.. by all accounts they had 2 emergencies during the day.

    grey and overcast here..

REALLY do need to start getting wood chopped up ready for the winter...as I think this winter coal will def be a luxury
