  • If you take only the TV service(s), Sky has a complete monopoly.

I had to get rid of its broadband when it changed servers a few years ago and stopped allowing use of proxies, because I couldn't any longer use the email addresses I have for difference purposes, such as those linked to my personal websites: everything defaulted to the Sky email address. (There was no advance notice of this and it was some time before I discovered that some of my e-correspondence was being disrupted because my emails were being rerouted to recipients' Spam and Trash folders.)

Sky's telephone offering is more expensive than NewCall's, so I can't benefit from that either.

None of the other TV suppliers - BT Vision, Virgin, TalkTalk - offers a like-for-like service: all of them deal only in bundles that include broadband and telephone. This
means that Sky has no competition at all for TV-only subscriptions… I don't understand this: I can't be the only person in the country who only wants the TV element or who, for whatever reason, can't exploit a bundled service: why would Sky's competitors not want to expand their potential customer base?

I think the Sky product is excellent but comes at a premium - the recent addition of on-demand TV with iPlayer etc really make it the best TV service in the UK. I used to be a subscriber to the full package plus an extra box for another room - plus a HD+ box.

When we were paying £60+ per month with SKY TV we also had a SkyCard (credit card they no longer offer sadly) which allowed me to get 1% cash-back on all my spend toward my SKY TV bill.

After being a top subscriber for a year or two we then downgraded. We actually went over all the programmes we watch/record and allocate them to channel/package - we couldn't believe how much was from ITV/C4/C5 etc... basically what we weren't even paying for!

After this we went to the most basic package. We actually loved the SKY+ element and we couldn't let it go - then after a price increase (it was only a £1 I think) we decided to cancel and try it out.

Best thing we ever did. We still use the SKY box for free stuff and don't miss the Sky+ element at all - we use my laptop and the TV for the catch up stuff (mini hassle but don't mind as we save money).

For anyone on the edge of leaving SKY... go for it. Save some money and we found having recorded lots of programmes it made us watch more TV than we actually really wanted to. Win Win!

Ok so i am a new customer to sky. They came to install my sky hd box and dish yesterday. Then within a couple of hours i had an email from sly informing me of price rises!!!! They had a whole 2 weeks to inform me before the came to install, yet they waited until i was tied in by first letting the engineer doing his installation. I feel really conned, especially since it seems that they knew about this since june!

I am on their complete bundle with HD package along with their tel and unlimited internet.. Let me tell you that it isnt cheap!!.. Close enough to £90 per month.

I already know exactly what i'll be doing in 12 months.

Isn't there a cooling off or "change your mind" period?

How much longer are Sky going to be able to get away with charging extra for HD?

Surely pretty much everyone is going to have an HD tele soon and this will become standard.

I can see another re-jig not far away. Sucks that new subscribers have to buy the whole sports package too if all they want is F1.

Well. I joined Sky 20 years ago next year, I've just left them. I was paying a discounted £28 a month, it should have been £31. I phoned up to ask what extra I was going to be getting and I got a nil response just hot air about inflation, oh yeah that thing that doesn't apply to my pay package. When you think about it 12 X £30 is £360 a year plus £145 TV licence. £500 a year to watch a TV? That is kind of hard to justify, well for me anyway. I've ordered an old generation Freesat box to take up the slack in one of my rooms, and then once I'm cut off from Sky I'll get the one with WiFi etc for my living room. I will sell both Sky boxes, one HD and one a basic Sky+ box and if the prices on Ebay last till September it will all have cost me overall £150, for 2 Freesat 1Gb boxes with access to the net on one of them. Saving £30 a month means I'll be neutral in 5 months, the rest then goes in my pocket. Can't say I won't miss it, but then any mug can pay hand over fist to a company that is making massive profits.....

I did research what is was going to cost me.. Hence i signed up. If you actually read my post properly, i just wasn't happy with sky notifying me of an increase in monthly cost just after the installation was done. They knew about the price rise since june according this thread.

I don't have an HD TV, nor do I have the Sports package

I think my TV is about 7 years old; 42", still works, produces a good enough image for our viewing requirements.

I've called them regarding their rise, and they've agreed not to charge it for 18 months. May be worth a try for other MSE users.
