Thanks for the reply but must question if alcohol wasn't the first drug he tried, so many state cannabis as the first drug taken which sent addicts on their way to addiction and completely forget that alchohol and cigarettes are drugs too.
I wonder how many mental problems are blamed on cannabis when in fact alchohol is a major factor.
How many schizophrenic alcoholics are there out there, we have all seen alcoholics with clear mental health issues yet it is never brought up in the same way cannabis is.
I'm so sorry for your son and your family and hope he sees his way through.I don't get nearly enough credit for not being a violent psychopath.0 -

I think the key word is recreational, as long as she isn't abusing them and she is aware of which to avoid ie these legal chemicals ie plant fertilizer etc then all you can do is make sure she is safe in the knowledge that she can come to you with any worries or problems.
All the worrying in the world by you isnt going to stop her, she will do it regardless, in all likelyhood she will as I and many of my peers did, grow out of it.
I pretty much did every drug going in my youth bar heroin and crack from the age of 14 and stopped apart from weed by the age of 25.
The people I know now still going out caning it at 40 are the ones who never did it in their teenage years.
Let her know that should she become seperated from her friends whilst mindless or stuck somewhere she can call on you, this is what I will be telling my son.I don't get nearly enough credit for not being a violent psychopath.0 -
.A bit of weed really is nothing and its the prescription drugs that you really need to be worried about..
I've got to be totally honest here and fully agree with the above.
I have personal experience of the 'mind altering' ability of certain prescription medications - my mother ended up addicted to barbiturates (prescribed for her epilepsy) and Valium (prescribed to calm her down). To say that my childhood was one with 'significant challenges' would be a mild way of putting it!
My current wife is addicted to both opiates and codeine for her severe pain (both prescribed). Additionally, she 'self medicates' with weed because she swears that it is the only thing that actually gives her relief from the pain, rather than just 'dulling' it as the prescription drugs do. Once again, until the first joint's been rolled and consumed it would be fair to say that 'tolerance' and 'good humour' are in very short supply indeed. In fact, bless her, she can be positively evil-tongued and tempered thanks to a combination of the pain and the side-effects of the medication. Again 'significant challenges on a daily basis' is being polite about the situation.
I'm not supporting the use of weed, but I am saying that I understand it. Many of my associates, both professional and personal, take weed recreationally, and some of those people are some of the most sharp-witted, quick thinking, intelligent middle-aged people you could ever come across.
I believe that, if weed is taken by an adult, once their brain and central nervous system is fully formed (generally accepted to be at age 18+), then weed can be helpful to cope with the stresses and strains of modern life and to cope with certain, extremely painful, illnesses - and the positive benefits of using the drug sensibly far outweigh the negative impact and potential side effects from use.
In fact, the medical profession are starting to take note of the pain-relieving effects of weed and there is a licensed drug available for certain conditions based on weed (Sativex).
However, common sense and restraint should prevail. As with other, legal, drugs, overdoing it is going to have an effect on the individual, and continual excesses are going to have an impact long term. I also believe it should not be used by any person whose brain and central nervous system is still developing and the use of drugs during this time of your life IS harmful to your long-term development. You see and hear so many stories of people who started taking weed in their early teens, who subsequently went on to have significant, sometimes permanent, MH issues - to me, that's just too much of a risk. You hear far less frequently of people that started with weed in adulthood suffering in the same way.
From a personal perspective, if any of my children decided they wanted to experiment with weed, I'd be happy for them to do so under my roof, and in my presence, once they're over 18 and earning to be able to afford it. That way, I could monitor them for any signs of adverse reaction(s) (seen plenty of that in my time on this planet....) and I would be very likely to know the source of their indulgence and, therefore, the quality of what they are choosing to consume.
And yes, I do partake on occasion - it helps with my depression and stress levels. I'll never do it within 8 hours of having to drive, nor will I do it in front of the children, nor will it ever be more than 2/3 joints - enough to put me into a nice, restful sleep! I don't smoke, can't drink, have to limit the amount of fat I eat (so limit the choccy intake) - I've got to have one pleasure in this life!

I used weed a few times as a teenager but would never have dared bring it into my parent's house. I had younger siblings and couldn't just behave however I liked. I used to stay out and sleep at friend's houses if I wanted to do things that would have inconvenienced the little ones or my parents' sleep.
I can see the point of people saying that they'd rather supervise their teen while using it, but I have a 7 year old and am honestly not sure how I'd feel if my teenager started bringing drugs into my house. I'd probably want to supervise him, but I'd like to think that he'd keep it in a secure place, safely put away, and wouldn't get it out before my youngest had gone to bed.52% tight0
