Partners Cat is Mental

I think it does depend a lot on the cat. I know some that would be miserable being kept inside all the time. Mine has always been a housecat and seems quite happy with it. If she'd been constantly trying to get out or seemed unhappy with it then I would have had to rethink it.
Quite frankly she doesn't have a bit of sense so I'm quite relieved she stays in. I've had her over 12 years and in that time she's got out about 3 times. First time went missing for 3 days, someone brought her back to the door saying he wasn't sure if he'd nudged her with his car as he'd just been starting it and she was in front - she stank of oil so I think she'd actually been sat on the engine. Luckily he saw her when she jumped off or could have nasty!
Second time she went missing for over a week, found her eventually a few streets away skinny and screeching. Nearly knocked me over when she saw me
Third time she went missing for 2 days, got herself stuck in a wall, someone had called the fire brigade out and they had to knock it down to get her out! (garden wall that had half fallen down anyway). That wasn't embarrassing at all when half the street turned out to watch. :rotfl:0 -
Mine was a house cat for the first year or so, she seemed fine with this, never asked to go out, didn't try to go out at all even when she had the opportunity to. At around 2 she suddenly decided she wanted to come for a walk with the dog (which I no longer have sadly). Now she just hangs out at the front of the house in the sun at times, is never away long or goes far. She is trained as used to copy the dog and so will come in when called or if I rattle the house keys.
She only ever goes out when I am in so I know she's safe, if fact she totally freaks if the door accidently closes with the wind and she is out, she will scream at me or thump at the door to let me know it needs opening again, she can't bare the idea of not being able to get in, and I would panic if she was ever out when I am out too.
Spoilt psycho that she is, but she's my psycho, and I wouldn't have her any other way.Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.0 -
I've got three house cats, my previous two were run over on the road outside within three months of one another. I have one total slob, one who is frankly extremely dim and one nutter. The first two couldn't care less about going out, I do occasionally offer but they just look at me as if I was mad and go back to sleep or in the case of the dim one, staring at the wall. The third one has no sense whatsoever, he'd be under the wheels of a lorry within a week if I let him out.
We have a big house, lots of activity going on, a huge attic to hunt spiders in and they have each other for company. It's not perfect and I wish they did have a lovely safe neighbourhood but hey ho, it's better than the cat rescue, none of them would have been anyone's first choice really except for a mad cat lady like me who feels sorry for the leftover cats.
I have two garden cats btw, two very scruffy female ferals that were lucky enough to be neutered on the last sweep of the local cat protection people. They look a bit odd with the ear clip but they're happy enough, they live in the shed on some old car rugs and eat cheap catfood and leftovers. I think they're sisters, they look like one another. They've had a hard life though, one has a crippled leg and the other is missing half her tail. They won't let me touch them. They seem quite happy to live out their lives in the garden though, I'll make sure they're fed and get any medical treatment they might need.Val.0 -

Cat like this on the other week. You need to understand how a cat thinks, which is not like a dog. You come up into its face and it will attack. He suggested serious play time, getting the cat knackered out. Letting it out at 4 years of age will only stress it out more. One cat actually turned out to be blind, which was never picked up by the vet or the family. It attacked a lot out of fear. Watching this programme you find out the owners are usually morons and its nothing to do with the cat at all. They just have no idea, how cats think and interact with people or things.
Did you girlfriend use her fingers as toys playing with the cat when young. It might think, okay lets play.
Yeah, we've got all three seasons of that and our cats are fine but it really is an eyeopener towards how a lot of cat owners can get things seriously wrong when it comes to the way that they deal with the situation. It's not easy having a good time. Even smiling makes my face ache.0 -
Hi all, there is a tv prog on next week all abouts cats behaviour etc, but sorry I didnt catch when, channel or time
but i'm sure it will be advertised alot nearer the day. 0 -
Very helpful post, thanks. It's bitten my foot but was more of a nip than the deep bite it did to her. I do find you particular quote above a bit strange. So you have a pet that covers you in scratches and bruises that you love unconditionally.
If a man were doing this to you, you'd be speaking to a domestic violence co-ordinator, yet because it's a cat who's nice most of the time (again like an abusive partner) it's somehow tolerable.
We have a strange attitude to animals in this country!
Clue: It's not human. It's a cat.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll

It was a Horizon programme on BBC2? I think. From what I can remember it's on the 13th June but the advert didn't have a time.0 -
Good evening cat lovers!!! Nice to be called all the names under the sun but its like water off a ducks back to me (or should that be cat's back if you get the water sprayer out).
Yes I'm a despicable man for not wanting my partner to be covered in holes and bruises and goodness knows what sort of disease from a cats mouth. Thanks to the former vet on page 3 for reminding everyone how disgusting places cats mouths can be.
Well well well it turns out nobody wants the poor moggy. Cats homes don't want to know as soon as you say it bites, which leaves us with a bit of a conundrum. We've heard conflicting things on letting it outside after all this time. Some people say it will be ok, others say it's been a house cat for too long and letting it out wont help. But somethings gotta give.
I wonder if any of the cat lovers on here would take him in, hypothetically speaking of course. Or are you keyboard warriors happier just pouring vitriol on my idylic life (apart from the cat of course). I'm sure if this thing lived in your house you may think otherwise.
Thanks again for the constructive posts. Toys, water spray, diffusers have all been tried but with no effect. Cats homes don't want him. I'm *almost* starting to feel sorry for the poor mite.0 -
