*tries to look all innocent*
and where exactly are these stores with customers so flush they leave change lying around, OP?
seiously kudos to you for handing it in.
It would be nice to think it's being popped into a charity box if it's not collected.Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY"I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness" Emily DickinsonJanice 1964-2016
Thank you Honey Bear0 -
I used to run an outlet of a large chain store (not a supermarket, but plenty of footfall), and the policy was:
*Put cash in sealed envelope - on the front, write time/date/place found. Log in Lost Property book and put in safe.
*If found by an employee, and not claimed after 30 days: given to employee
*If found by a customer, and not claimed after 30 days: donated to the chain's patron charity (there was a banking system dedicated to this specifically).
Over 5 years of working there, on average about £10 a day was left behind. Anything that was £50+ was claimed by the customer 99% of the time. Smaller amounts, probably about 20%. Biggest find was an envelope with £5000 in £50s  Guy came running back about an hour later. We gave the employee that handed it in the rest of the day off plus a few other freebies0 -
Where I used to work, of one of us (employees) found some money, we'd hand it in, and like above, it would be put into an envelope, date etc on the front, but we would have to wait 3 months before we could claim it!0

The thread is about banknotes left in the self service checkout and it would appear that none of the operaters on standby at these machines in my local stores, are following the rules (in my case at least) when I hand over notes left behind.
Edit : It may be that they are following the rules but genuinely dont know what happens to the money. Having said that not one has ever replied that "It gets logged" when I have posed the question, "What happens to the banknotes people leave at the self-service checkoutsAbandoned0 -
My small son once found a £5 at the self service till in Tesco here. I told him to hand it in to Customer Services. They logged it and said if no one claimed it within three months he could have it.... Three months later we went back and they could find no record of it at all - but they gave him £5 anyway
I've left money in a self service before and been really disappointed so would probably always hand it in.... probably :cool:Save £12K 2013 #54 - £4625/£15k£19,625 saved since 2011£50,000 by August 2014SPC #1925 £600 -
Since there is always an assistant on hand at SSCs I have simply handed the money to them and usually they make towards customer services.Abandoned0

True. Ideally it should go to charity as it is neither your money OR the stores money, and if I could be sure that that was the case then I'd hand it in 100% each and every time, but that isn't always the case, and if it came down to it, I know what a lot of people would choose to do.
EDIT: Having said that, if it was a big amount, I'd still probably hand it in anyhow, as I'd feel guilty not doing so....probably :rotfl:0 -

Charity begins and ends at home.0
