Self Service Check Out Problem

Last week I found that someone had left a £5 note in the self service check out and handed it to an assistant. Two weeks ago, I found £15 and handed it over once again. In fact since last October, I have handed over a total of £40 in Tescos and Morrisons. Once when my shopping came to exactly £2 and I put in a £2 coin I then discovered £15 lying in the machine. Told the assistant who said that I had made a mistake and must have put a £20 note in. When I pointed out that my receipt was correct and that there were no coins given as change, she put the machine out of order and went to get me a £3 refund. Eventually I got fed up trying to say that the money was not mine and so put it in my pocket and went home.
Just how many of us are experiencing the same problem? It must number in hundreds if not thousands. And what happens to the cash we hand over? No names are taken and the assistants in my case at least, just take the notes and walk towards the customers service counter.
On the last 3 occasions, I have made a point of asking another assistant what happens to the money and the answer has always been, "I dont know". Do you know?

What you giving the money you find back to the store for?
Do you think they are going to give it back to the person who left it by mistake?
Its finders keepers losers weepers.
Next time take the money you find and treat it as a nice little bonus.0 -
As there is no way of tracing the customer who's money it is, I guess it's just extra profit for the store
They must just keep it I would think, I don't know what else they would do with it, although the honourable thing would be to give it to a charity or something? Actually, you've raised a good question there.
I think a lot of people (even though they are prompted) forget to look underneath at the note dispenser, as they are in a rush, don't see it etc, IMO it should be more prominent.
The most I have ever found, was 50p, I just popped it in my purse, there was no way they'd trace the customer who left it, and why should the store profit....but, I did feel incredibly shifty doing it :rotfl: It does raise the question what I (and many others) would do if it was more? I think though, it's in my nature, to be honest, and I probably would have handed it in too, although I might be tempted to keep it, depending on what kind of mood I was in, and wether or not the store had p****d me off or not that day :rotfl:
:T to you though for handing the money (or trying to lol!) back in0 -

I must be too honest. I felt so guilty taking the £18 change (including the £3 refund) that I didn't go into the store for a fortnight or so. Anyway, have just been to Morrisons and asked CS what happened to the money that I handed over, and guess what? They didn't know.Abandoned0

Are there any Tesco or Morrisons personnel on the forum who could find out and give us an answer to the question, "Is there an in-store policy regarding change left in self service checkouts".Abandoned0

I thought that the money might go to charity in some stores, but I wonder if that applies to ALL stores though? :think:0 -
I work in Sainsbury's and the money (notes) gets taken to customers services, logged in a book then gets put in the till with the rest of the money. I don't know what happens if it's not collected.
Most of the time I manage to catch people before they leave without their change.
If people leave a little bit of change, then we just keep it on the self checkout in case someone is a bit short of money when paying.0 -
If the previous customer used a loyalty card, it's nice to think they might try to trace it back...0
