Please can someone put me out of my misery and tell me what Sweet Potatoes taste like (roughly, of course)? Please don't say they taste like sweet potatoes:rotfl:
So many of you list them as your faves so I'm thinking they may be fantastic, but then again Parsnips seem to be well-liked too and I loathe them:eek:
For years I hated parsnips cos I took some (thinking they were roast potatoes) in restaurant and got such a shock
I'm still not sure I would choose to have them anywhere but home, but when I roast them I parboil them with the potatoes I'm going to roast and then coat them in a mixture of plain flour and stock cube before roasting in the minimum of oil. Yum! Sometime I'm going to try adding onion/garlic powder and parsley to the flour, I think that would be nice.
I couldn't adequately describe sweet potatoes as they don't really taste like anything else! They're not perfumey like parsnips - the first time I tried s/p they were mashed and I didn't like them at all. The texture of cooked sweet potato (done in wedges, see my earlier post) is quite creamy. I could imagine if you added cinnamon you might almost imagine it was a fruit you were eating (blindfolded :rotfl: ) Soz if that's not much help!0

sweet potatoes don't taste like anything else, they are sweet-tasting, the texture is wetter than a regular potato. They have less starch in them. The dark orange ones are better.0

They taste a bit like squash in my opinion, but with a softer texture. Don't take our word for it, though! Take the plunge and taste them, they are gorgeous (esp. in mash).
My fav. veg, though, are DEFINITELY asparagus and globe artichokes - and because the season for both is quite short when they come in season I seriously overdose on them (I try to buy only UK veg in season if I can). Asparagus is nearly out now but I am looking forward to a good plateful of fried artichokes!
So many people talk about Butternut Squash, which I like too, but if I had to quote my absolute FAVOURITE among the squashes family, it would have to be the Kabocha (japanese winter squash - so much for buying British, but it can be grown successfully in the UK - I did it!).
CaterinaFinally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0
