Remembering sacrifice both past and present is important...but not being a martyr to it is healthy too.
While you are free (thanks in no small part to these people) to have your view so are those with an opposing view, And to dictate to them with threatening in the manner done in OP, or to withhold trade..not for an act but for an opinion, is abhorrent to that very freedom faught for IMO.
I would have hoped we were well beyond metaphorical white feathers by now, accepting that living in harmony might mean agreeing to disagree. It makes perfect sense for an employer to ask people not to make various shows of anything to ensure smooth day to day operation. We're employees to be discriminated against for wearing a poppy out of work hours and uniform I think would be a different matter and abhorrent.
I am not a martyr to it, what a strange suggestion! who mentioned white feathers? Threatening manner? I have said that I will not give these establishments my money and will let them know why. I don't consider witholding the ever decreasing amount I spend a threat at all.
You seem to have become a little over emotional
Living in harmony? when will that be then? soon I hope. I feel this country has descended into a very unpleasant place to live, and I worry about future generations living here.0 -

I apologise if I upset you. My comments were general not personal.
And no, I am not over emotional, which is part of the reason I am able to recognise horrors and acts of terrorism without emotional crutches like poppies out of the remembrance season, nor feel the need to display where I give support with various wristbands
We do live in relative harmony in the Uk.....despite differences of opinion. Things like presenting an unbiased uniform in commercial enterprise probably aid that situation somewhat. As to whether its unpleasant or not....I am in Uk by choice, so I obviously think it has something going for it. Perfect, no....of course not, but relatively ok, relatively well intentioned? Yeah, I'd say that.0 -
Bit late - it's already gone viral on every social networking site I'm a member of!
Then the stupid person (is it the person who has been suspended, I wonder?) who first posted it should find themselves in deep s**t for this stunt.
People should realise that they can't just post things willy-nilly on the internet with no comeback.
Obviously someone with access to the actual letter is responsible, they may find themselves out of a job and sanctioned for any benefit claim.
I always wear a poppy on Remembrance Day.
Presumably someone decided that after the sad events last week it was appropriate to wear one in support of Lee Rigby and his family.
Is this a one-off action or is it an organised campaign of support?
I wonder if the person who was suspended still thinks it was a good idea and that he/she was in the right to refuse to take the poppy badge off?
I certainly wouldn't boycott a store over this.0 -
Some of the BBC presenters etc are actually Irish and would never wear the poppy at home, as to a large number of people in Ireland it is supporting the British army who did anything but good in large parts of Ireland.
Personally I have no objection to the poppy but it is a political symbol and politics has no place in work and no-one should feel forced or co-erced into wearing it.
If the poppy really was simply to remember those soldiers killed in WW1/2 etc then i would more inclined to support it, but it is seen a memorial to all soldiers killed not just those during WW1 & WW2 - and the money goes towards supporting ex-servicemen as well as those currently serving.
I have never seen it as a political statement. Having a badly injured father, I see it only as a way of giving thanks to those who have given so much for their country.
I think it is better to leave any discussion about the British in Ireland, or indeed the Irish in Britain.0 -

Not with anyone I know actually I in the MoD, but retired services, and mainly the 'institutions' that exist....churches, village shops, schools even. Similarly, I am aware of Coty work aces where it would be 'a poor decision' to not wear one.
I work for a company that is mainly staffed by ex-forces and so the poppy is prominent in November. However, there are some who choose not to wear it and their personal choice is respected. I'm sure that in some organisations/areas subtle pressure is used to get people to wear one but I can honestly say that I have never encountered it.

I agree. Seems they've censored their own name / address but left other names on there which is a bit strange. Probably didn't predict how much this would be shared but doesn't take much common sense to know it would cause a stink!____________________________________________

Well that is one of the beauties of Britain isn't it! I had looked forward to that store going online, but I will not now be shopping with them, I hope that my witholding my 12.00 per week will make them think :rotfl:0 -
Just thought I would add I work for Tesco and they are really supportive of the poppy appeal. Donation boxes with poppies are left in the staff areas and staff are free to wear these on their work uniform. We usually also have volunteers that are arranged by head office standing by the entrance offering poppies to our customers. I don't see why Morrisons are kicking up such a fuss. I does more harm to their brand by being so anal about this uniform rule rather than supporting staff in wearing a poppy for a few weeks a year.Graduated 16 July 2013 with First Class Honours :jHouse Deposit: £6,493.10 - Cashback Total: £447.670

:rotfl: indeed.
Anyone know if Morrisons allow staff to wear poppies during the Remembrance period?lawstudent wrote: »I does more harm to their brand by being so anal about this uniform rule rather than supporting staff in wearing a poppy for a few weeks a year.
But it's not the Remembrance period right now, is it?
What would Tesco's stance be if you wore your poppy today?
Don't forget - if you post a letter about you being suspended, do make sure you don't post individuals' names as in the link in the OP.0
