Own brand washing powder ?

I seem to remember reading a thread about this topic somewhere but I can't find it anywhere. My DS has excema & is very sensitive, he really flared up a while ago & after lots of trials & experiments he settled with Persil Non bio (as well as his creams obviously). When shopping in Asda the other day I noticed their own label non bio powder is just about identical ingredients to persil & just about half the price. However I am a little wary to try something else in case it sets DS off again. Has anyone tried it & in your opinion is it just the same as the persil ? I would like to reduce my shopping bill where I can but obviously only if i can (ifswim). thanks anyone ;)

I use Sainsburies own brand. I started using Fairy non-bio as both DS's and hubby have sensitive skin and mild excema. But then I decided to switch and see what happened - so far, so good and it's so much cheaper especially when on special offer. When you get through as much washing as we do - you certainly notice the difference.

He has defo settled with the persil non bio, its just the ingredients in the asda one looked so similar i wonder if its more or less the same thing ? i may get a small box to try

Just a thought but you could always try it first with clothes that don't go next to the skin - not sure if your DS is still in vests - but you could try it with T-shirts first and see how you get on.

true, when i was trying different brands i would wash his pjs, pants & vests in it & then see how he was. I could usually tell fairly quickly if it agreed with him or not ;) i'm not sure why he used to be able to use some brands but now can't

We have the Lidl non-bio, which has been fine for us (I have to be careful, too, with reactions from certain washing powders.)
Do you know someone who uses the cheaper powder who wouldn't mind letting you have a cupful, or washing one item of clothing in with theirs for you to test it?

Always worth trying for a small length of time before changing, swapping about a lot will cause more flare ups. My partner has very very bad skin, I now use Bold (because I got it cheap, about a years supply) without any problems, but if I kept trying a different one every few weeks he'd have flare ups straight away.

Using less I find helps the most, leaves less residue on the clothes which causes the irritation, if I have to use more powder I put them on an extra rinse but I usually use a spoonful of washing powder and same of soda crystals in each wash.
One day I might be more organised...........

good point about the swapping around ! i only noticed the asda own brand cos it was about half the price of persil. i don't resent spending the money if it is better suited to him, but if i try the asda's own for a few items to see, then if it's the same results & it suits him then it means more money for us ! i'll maybe leave it another couple of weeks just to be on the safe side & I think i'll only try maybe a pair of pjs & pants (just in case). ;)

If it was me, I would try the Asda one if haddn't been swapping recently say in last month or so, use as little as possible (I've never seen any difference in how clean things are from using a scoup to a spoon) I think it works out I use 1/8th of the recommended minimum amount :rotfl: and give it a go for at least 2 weeks or so.

Also if a flare up occurs when I change something I am always aware of the fact that other things can cause it, inc food, weather etc.

Mines cleared up almost completely now since taking Evening primrose oil but wasn't as bad as my partners

I found this site helpful - http://www.undermyskin.co.uk/general/preventing_eczema.htm that page is about doing a 'trigger diary' just about to send it to a friend this morning, we were discussing it last night as her partners self esteem is non existant because of his eczema, not helped by his mother who called him a freak all the time!!! Grrrr!
