can we ask for a gluten free prescription for

Was told that for a coeliac testing I would need to reintroduce it for 6 weeks which I was not prepared to put myself through (for the sake of a prescription for gluten free bread and pasta)
I am the same. I've had crohn's disease all my adult life and more recently developed a bad reaction to wheat (which later turned out to be all glutinous foods). It took ages to work it out as the symptoms are similar to a crohn's flare. I went gf, and was fine, and then made a mistake with some cous cous (didn't realise it was wheat!) and was really really ill. My consultant told me that people with crohns have a much higher risk than the general population of developing coeliac and advised me to reintroduce wheat into my diet for 6 weeks so I could be tested. I told him that I am not going to put myself through that in a million years - I'll stay undiagnosed, thanks!
I make a lot of raw food recipes as they use ground nuts to make 'pastry cases' and I also make a very acceptable wrap/crepe using a pancake batter made with ground almonds instead of flour. The bonus is that these recipes also tend to be lower carbs and less sugar, which is great for diabetics.I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0 -

Goose Girl - we have a local artisan bakery that does a wonderful spelt sourdough...It is always fresh and still warm....my little treat at £3 a shot but far nicer than the sliced gluten free bread from the supermarket that always seems to taste dry and full of holes (I would rather go without than eat it!)
I seem to be fine with oats so have oatcakes and porridge without reaction...oatcakes with peanut butter is a great snack to keep you going...good slow release foods0 -
I want some spelt bread lol, nowhere near me though.
Anyone had Kamut bread? There were lots of Kamut products around in Europe, but I haven't seen any in shops here.
I was at a Vietnamese restaurant and they used rice flour for their deep fried sweet potato pancakes.0 -
Be careful with oatcakes - they are fine if you are wheat intolerant but some are not suitable for coeliacs (nairns do gluten free oatcakes which predictably are a lot dearer than their ordinary ones, which they state are not suitable for coeliacs).
Another place to get gf food is at a good farmers market. Ours has a few stalls selling homemade gf bread, cakes, scones etc. One lady has a daughter with coeliacs and she makes a gf version of everything on her stall... and charges the same price as the ordinary version.I'm a retired employment solicitor. Wheat isn't a poison....unless you're me and other coeliacs...
Are you intolerant just because you think your are, or becuase Youtube said you are? Do you have the symptoms of coeliac disease or are you just switching cos you were told to?
You can be me if you want, gluten AND lactose intolerant, unable to eat 3/4 of the food out there cos if what's in it. Can't even eat porridge it makes me flare, and I'd rather do without the wind and bloating and shifting between not going and eye of a needle type poo. And that's without the asthma attacks and tiredness.
So, no, they wont give you GF stuff free if it's a lifestyle choice. YOU made the choice, it wasn't made for you* Jan NSD *

also, just to add something else, since I was diagnosed I am SAVING money by home baking rather than buying bread/cakes/biscuits etc. There are loads of recipes online, and it's so much more fun to make your own.0

You do know that GP means general practitioner?
Means you doctor has a basic training in everything, but does not specialise. This is why we get referred, to see specialists. So its pretty understandable that your GP hasn't possibly read all the latest quackery found on the net, prolly too busy referring patients who do have a medical condition to specialists to get the treatment they need
Enjoy your gluten free diet. I'm sure you do feel a lot better. It's pretty common for humans to become wheat sensitive as they get older, there's not one woman I work with over 40 who complains of wind, bloating and cramps after eating bread. Not one of us are coeliacs.0
