Morning all. I want to say a big thankyou to all you flyladies. Firstly for the posivibes for DS - he has a new job!!!! And secondly just for the ongoing support on here, I had Two, yes Two, unexpected visitors this week (I don't normally get visitors at all, last lot was 10 months ago and planned) and the house was in a fit state to welcome them.
:j Yeah - well done to your DS, Jazee! That's brilliant news!
And I agree with you  about how nice it is to welcome people in without having to shift stuff before they can sit down (or even get in the door). Our friends who came yesterday evening commented on what a nice house we have, and all we did yesterday was hoover the floors. I could have taken them into any room without shame. Even better is the fact that my DH - not normally a tidy person - has started helping to keep the place looking nice :A
German gooseberry cake? Recipe please!

Morning all. It looks like it was 2009 (!!!) really since I was last on here (checking for last post, but can't believe that's right) and lots has happened. DS & girlfriend split up very traumatically for my son who could no longer cope with her psych issues (she is now marrying someone else next month!), and DS is very happy with lovely new girlfriend. DD is married and I have 2 beautiful grandchildren, DH had an accident in work 18 months ago & has just been signed off for another 3 months, I have been made redundant twice, but am happy in current job since Oct 2011, I've lost 2 cats & a dog (all absolute darlings) since Christmas, I've studied Diplomas in Anatomy & Physiology, Holistic Massage, Sports Massage and am currently studying Reflexology and for work I've studied PTTLLS, Learning Coach and Basic Skills Tutor! Needless to say, flying has taken a disastrous back seat.
With your help, I want to get things back on track, although hubby will be doing the day time flying as much as he can :T and I can do a bit when I come home each day.
So far this morning, and I don't think this will be on anyone's list, I've cleaned up dog sick _pale_ but I hope you'll be impressed that I've already done the ironing!
Now I have to steal myself to get wash and dressed & tackle town for a few bits then come home, walk the DogStar and take hubby to Cardiff as a result of a furious row with Jacamo! (But that's another story)
I'm so glad to be back and very pleased you let me in! Looking forward to catching up with you all. xxxDMP mutual support thread No: 433 - Mortgage - £54,556, Credit cards - £4012, Unsecured loan - £3,376, Other - £419

This easy but spectacular recipe was given to me by my landlady in 1969 when I was at uni in Germany for a term. She taught me the joys of cooking for a crowd and the cake always brings back happy memories of my time with that most hospitable family
Frau Freythaler’s gooseberry cake
You need a deep tin about 25 – 30 cm in diameter: either springform (mine came from 1ke@) or with a loose base. Grease and/or line the tin, even if it claims to be non-stick!
This recipe gives 8 large or 12 "normal" portions. For 4-6 portions halve the amounts and use a deep 7" or 8" cake tin
NB: the finished cake is fragile and will fall apart if you try to turn it out upside down
Oven 150 degrees C
Base layer
Measure out 250 g SR flour and add 100 – 150g butter straight from fridge, cut in chunks.
Rub the butter into the flour by hand (like making pastry) or whiz it in a food processor until it is like fine breadcrumbs. Add 70 g caster sugar and 1 beaten egg. You should end up with a lump of dough that is the consistency of marzipan (the more butter you use, the softer it will be). Transfer to the baking tin and use your knuckles to push out the dough evenly across the base.
Fruit layer
You need approx. 750g of gooseberries (if using frozen, take enough to fill a 1 pt pudding basin and allow to defrost, then drain off liquid before use). Spread the uncooked fruit out over the base. Do not add any sugar to this layer!
Meringue topping
Beat 4 egg whites (or the equivalent in reconstituted egg white powder) until stiff. Add 300g sieved icing sugar and (optional ) 200g ground hazelnuts (available from @ldi). Don’t worry if the meringue goes runny! Pour the mixture over the top of the cake.
Bake for about 1 hr 15 min, or until the meringue is lightly browned.
Serve warm or cold. Extra-nice with cream or ice cream
Variations
1. Try it with other fruit such as plums (stoned and halved), blackcurrants, blackberries, apple slices.
2. Use ground almonds instead of hazelnuts.
3. Omit the meringue topping for an everyday pudding.
4. Take out about 4 tablespoons of the sweet crumb mixture for the base (i.e. before adding the egg) and sprinkle this over the fruit instead of meringue, like a light crumble topping.

It was the opposite side of the motorway with the major accident that was shut for 4 hours!!!!
It was busy on our side but it usually is and we avoided the worst of it by stopping for a KFC stuff the children.
AGAIN!!!! I got no dinner last night.. we got here about 7pm and they put OH some dinner by and put the rest in the freezer so I got nothing.. AGAIN!!...
NOW, they are saying to just do sandwiches for dinner next time we visit.. I'm stopping at the takeaway.. f*** this!!! I shall write myself a note.
On a terribly sad note... I left my phone charge cable at home.. which means in a couple of hours I'll have no phone *cry* I think my arms might fall off! I might send OH to locate me a new one.. so I'll have 3.. actually.. we are heading to Tescos (I forgot to bring bowls and cutlery for the girlies) so I'm sure I'll be able to pick one up there.
There isn't a single comfy seat in the house.. the new sofas are very nice but cripple me, I spent all evening and this morning sat on a pouffe or a dining chair! I barely slept as the bed has as much support as a jelly ...
BUT... I'm going to have a shower.. I can't get in ours .. of course I've been washed! ... but a shower and scrub will be nice.LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -

I would have turned round and gone back home. What does OH feel about this?
Thanks for the recipe, Ionafan, it looks gorgeous. I just need to source some gooseberries;) and thanks for the translations, I never studied German so I know only a few words...many of which are probably food related;)
Or I could use rhubarb *rubs chin*
I have started tidying the RoD. I have found a temporary home for the bag of shiny brass door handles which are to replace my dull tarnished ones. I would have fitted them all myself by now but these 'new' ones have a different sized 'plates' to mine so new screw holes need drilling.Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY"I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness" Emily DickinsonJanice 1964-2016
