I did say 'most GPs' :) I still have doubts how much support a GP can provide a patient or diagnosed depression when they only get to see their patients for 10 mns. It is different when what is required is maintenance support and they have got to know the condition of the patient well through the years.

I guess it depends on the relationship with your GP. Mine sees me for as long as it takes, often 30-40 mins in a consultation. He books my appts himself (they have access to far more appts than the receptionist).

He also takes telephone consultations when I can't get into the surgery and will visit me at home when necessary. He's known me over 10yrs so think he has a pretty good grasp of how my illness affects me and the type of intervention I need when ill.

i think what thrown the thread was refrences to a certain poster who claimed that because she's a gym bunny everyone she has dealt with at work (JCP staff) should be like her PLEASE PLEASE DONT START THIS TOOING AND FROEING about the subject its wearing thin now.

    .

At what point did I say everyone should be like me? You have totally misenterpreted what I said

It was suggested I like to scoff dounuts and hang about drinking and gossipsing.

I replied saying no I love to exercise and pointed out the benefits exercise had for me, my family and may have for others. I was overweight after having my child, low self esteem and post natal depression. Losing weight and exercise helped contribute towards me recovery.

With respect, unless there is an underlying mental illness then PND (or baby blues) usually lasts about 6-8 weeks and responds very well to antidrepessants and a lifestyle change, including diet and exercise.

Which is why I was promoting this to support people with depression, not mental illness.

The OP has not mentioned a mental illness, and no I am not saying she doesn't have one, but as you have said people can and do respond to lifestyle changes but those changes have to have some input from ones self.

But clinical depression and PND are two completely different animals. You simply can't compare them.

And I would not like to. I think the op has had lots of advice as I'm sure many other readers have from this post. Some very good points raised, some good arguemts and discussions and at the end of the day no-one of can say exactly whether or not the OP is indeed 'fed up' depressed, clinically depressed or has a mental illness.

I think the word 'depression' does not cover the wide spectrum that it is expected to. I also think the word can be used far to freely.

Well, unless I'm misunderstanding you, you said you were promoting your experience with PND as an example of how easy it is to overcome depression.

approach and how someone interprates something.

as you can see allot has been sturred and misconstrued by a few simple words.... mental illness and depression. just imagine the reaction youll receive face to face if you got it wrong, to wich ill point out that going a day course about MH is something can make you and you alone understand to put training into practice could unleash something your not trained for, do you now see where im coming from?

I'm sorry but clinical depression IS a mental illness.

From what you describe, I suspect you were suffering normal baby blues rather than PND. I sufffered PND and was sectioned to a mother & baby psychiatric unit.
