Thank you for your helpful reply. I have been reading, but can't work out because i have baggage to check in will i be charged at desk even if i check in online?

I've measured backpacks for hand luggage and will be certain to weigh case before we leave.

No, you will not be charged extra if you have checked in online ;)

Do you have a link to details of this action they are 'considering'?
I didn't search very hard but I found this and this for example.

The key here is consumer choice, no one forces you to fly with any airline.
The consumer cannot make an informed choice if competition is distorted.

I note you have again avoided my question on what is reasonable ...
That's not for me to answer. It would be what a reasonable person would expect.

Thank you for the link. If you read it, you would see they are proposing a limit on sizes, as well as standardising what may be taken on different airlines. That somewhat contradicts what you said, there is certainly no mention of what may be deemed reasonable. In fact, the press release does not even state that the Commission will be addressing the issue, but rather that some MEP thinks they should.

You are not now suggesting that the noted allowances are unreasonably different and unusually low, but rather that is for someone else to decide?

    Keep digging that hole! :rotfl:

I think you missed the link to the Irish Independent article which I added in an edit. There's more information there.

The thing I fear most about flying with Ryanair is that they'll weigh my cabin baggage at the gate and then sting me with a surcharge for putting it in the hold. In practice, they're much more interested in size than weight, but it can happen. 10kg isn't a lot for cabin baggage; mine is usually around 15kg. Be prepared and work out in advance which heavy items you can remove from your cabin baggage and put in your pockets if this happens to you.
At Liverpool a few months ago they were only interested in weight - but they were only weighing bags which looked way oversize anyway. They didn't seem to care about the size.

I'm surprised you get 15kg into a bag of Ryanair dimensions!

Of course no one thinks that the overhead lockers might just be designed to take a certain number of items of a certain size and weight, generally to allow one item for each passenger.
In the free for all days there were often delays and arguments over hand luggage!

My MEP possibly wants to make it compulsory for all Pax to prove they are not stupid before booking, but it has not happened yet
    either!

If even Mrs bob the Saver can do 6 months on 8kg in a bag plus what's in her pockets I can't see the damn problem with a weekend in Barcelona on 10kg, what the heck do you have in those bags?

Good point. Ryanair's cage is dangerous too. Twice when lifting my case out of the cage, the cage has fallen over because it is not properly weighted or fixed to the floor. Given that the cage is tall and made of metal, this has the potential to cause serious injury.

There were a number of people who got money back from some low cost airlines, because apparently the size of the cage where you put your suitcase in was smaller than the dimensions stated. As I said before my case wouldnt fit into the bmi baby gauge but it was the smallest dimension, the gauge wasnt at the departure gate, it was before you went through security, but mine wouldnt fit. However it comfortably fitted into the overhead locker of the plane.

I got it on because it wasnt checked before I boarded the plane and it wasnt over the allowance either, but I dont think the differences between airlines help matters either. If your case is the smallest size and mine was, it should fit.

I see more problems on Ryanair flights than I do on British Airways flights. Ryanair really ought to have its planes manufactured differently with a smaller hold and lower floor in the cabin, allowing for taller overhead lockers. I'm not sure whether this would be possible, but it would make sense for Ryanair's business model and then everyone would be happy.

Total re-design and re-certification, that should bring prices down for the consumer :wall:

For the record I'm quite happy with Ryanair, but then I can read what it says on their web-site and I am happy to get 12 - 20 Euro flights thank you very much.
