Are you serious....if I used that term where I work I'd be disciplined. 'Coloured' has been a word shied away from since the mid-70s? Anyone aware of the apartheid regimes of Southern Africa and their classification of the races knows why the term coloured is offensive. It is simply not a word that is used today. It is a word synonymous with the classification of peoples between those who were ‘white’ and thus superior and all those who were not.
Maybe a South African would be offended, most black British would just consider it a bit old fashioned.0 -
The UKIP policy on energy trots out the ancient urban myth that China builds a coal-fired power station every single week....
According to BBC in 2007;
China is now building about two power stations every week
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/6769743.stm
Or more recently
China is expected to add about 160 new coal-fired plants to the 620 operating now, within four years.
http://www.thegwpf.org/china-india-building-4-coal-power-plants-week/
the World Resources Institute (WRI) identified 1,200 coal plants in planning across 59 countries, with about three-quarters in China and India....India is planning 455 new plants compared to 363 in China,
http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2012/nov/20/coal-plants-world-resources-institute
So the claim is certainly believable. If the industrialised part of China is roughly like a European nation or an American state, and a coal-fired power station can generate enough power for an urban area like Sheffield, Bristol, Lyon, Chicago etc, then are we seriously supposed to believe that China establishes a new urban area on that scale 52 times a year?
There are 1.3 billion plus Chinese. If all of them buy a fridge and a dishwasher you're going to need a lot of power plants to keep 'em powered up.:)0 -
Maybe that honesty is what is driving voters to UKIP.
IMO this their(his) USP. People may not like what he says or agree with the point of view but he doesn't bounce questions. They may be one trick (maybe 2 or 3) but factually they are usually right and they don't take prisoners.
Outside that range they may well be wanting.
I would love to see him head to head with someone like Shapps."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....
"big business is parasitic, like a mosquito, whereas I prefer the lighter touch, like that of a butterfly. "A butterfly can suck honey from the flower without damaging it," "Arunachalam Muruganantham0 -
lots of info available about energy usage and future projections; why not show us some information to support your view
The 'statistic' has been around for years (probably long enough to feature as a question in your local pub quiz). If the Chinese are able to build a power station in, say, two years, then it ought to be possible to find out on the internet the locations of 104 power stations currently under construction.
Another poster made the point that the UK has 250 power stations altogether.
It is of course possible that the Chinese build lots of small power stations rather than a small number of large ones.

so basically you agree that the quoted statistic is broadly correct?0 -

Not at all, I simply don't believe that China has built one UK-sized coal-fired power station per week for the last 5/6/7 years or so.
If UKIP wish to use that statistic in their arguments, then it is up to them to provide the evidence.

They don't use that statistic in their argument.
All they say is that china build one coal fired power station each week. This appears to have been verified.Meantime China (c. 24%) is building a new coal-fired power stationevery week, with India (c. 5%) not far behind.

You can't just add in "UK sized" and claim they now need to back this up as you have added it. They have never stated that.

Your second quote is the very unverified statement which my original post refers to.

I'm not sure what your issue is with it anymore? It's been said to be true. You then added bits which UKIP never stated to prove it's wrong?
It's what you don't say which is sometimes more significant. If I were to buy a petrol-driven generator, some might say that I had built a power station!
