Anyone who has said its a protest vote need to get a grip of themselves. The current generation of people who are in their 20's (like me) grew up under a wreckless labour government and are now being squeezed by the conservatives. We have seen this country systematically ruined with lots of change and are now struggling to buy a house or even get a job. This constant two party politics has done nothing for this country apart from erode it beyond recognition, its time for thinking outside the box.

Not the first time a minor party gets a reasonable protest vote in local elections. Extremely unlikely to get anywhere near that level of support at a general election.

And don't forget the 26% support is in the wards they are standing in - which will have been selected as those where they have the best chance.

It was reported that te last time these seats were contested was 2009 when GB was very unpopular, so presumably labour lost seats then and would expect to win them back now. Last time I looked UKIP had won more seats than labour so whose votes are they taking?
The only thing that is constant is change.

Well, how can you class anti immigration as right wing, when very left wing establishments are also anti immigration?

One argument would be that the scale of left to right is not flatu like a piece of paper, but circular or even round like the earth, A point to East and west can be the same distance away from us, and yet close to each other. In some aspects of left and right, control is an issue...and it's the far side of the circle from where I want to be really.

N). He's married to a German, so clearly not against Europeans, just the current concept of the united Europe.
    .

I accept wholeheartedly that its possible (and sometimes but not always feel the same myself) but the one doesn't prove the other to my mind.

Graham, there is however an awful lot of ammunition to use against UKIP.

They have had to distance themselves from a number of their own candidates in this and previous elections due to some rather unpleasant comments and views expressed. Whilst they always state these are not the views of the party (on topics from disability, Gay rights, women's rights, abortion, rape.... etc etc), the party does seem to attract those with such views.

The recent re-branding into a mainstream party is interesting, particularly the claims its a not a right wing party.

A QT audience member quoted last night that the pathetic Tory smear campaign found questionable dirt on 0.3% of the candidates.

    Hardly shattering.

Trawl through the twitter accounts of the lib/lab/cons and you will find more no doubt.

    What does that mean?

Exactly what it says. Unions recruit workers from Eastern Europe.

Why? I should imagine they are still anti-immigration as surely the import of cheap labour undermines the unions.

    Oh my gawd.

    Sorry I didn't realise you didn't know.

Unions are Labour run, corrupt organisations and don't put the interests of British workers first.

They recruit workers from Eastern Europe.

They drive down labour rates working for big businesses - not the poeple who they claim to represent.

Theres a lot of talk at the moment about UKIP taking votes from the tories and this being bad for the tories.

What's not mentioned quite so much, yet, is what this means for labour.

Labour can no longer make a coalition with the lib dems (apparently, according to the number crunchers), which the lib dems have already stated could be their intention.

Labour will now HAVE to win a majority. The option of a coalition between labour and lib dems has now dissipated. Like last time around, they would need a 3rd party to join.

The tories can still join up with UKIP to form a coalition. So it may be bad for the tories....but it's worse for labour!

Various low skilled Jobs and even higher skilled jobs I guess.

They organize trade/jobs fairs over there etc.

I'm sure I have some links somewhere i'll try and find them and post them up later.
