I suppose for any man reading this thread, this is all a real education!

Absolutely, but stuff that will be relevant in x years time when little lady becomes not so little lady.

Not wishing to speak out of turn, but mum of girl in question might like to also ensure daughter takes adequate 'protection' with her on holiday....if you know what I mean.

Sun-bathing might not be her only concern when it comes to planning holiday things and not wanting 'you know what' to arrive at an inappropriate moment.

For some people, periods are anything but 'minor.' Incrediby long, painful and heavy. Not my idea of a fun 2 weeks in the sun.

Yes i totally agree, at 17 (same as OP's daughter) was im agony for days. Fainting, crying, doubled up in agony, few days in bed, throwing up etc its certainly not minor and i would have hated to have that on holiday. Wouldnt be any point going if i was going to be like that.

My mum understood and was fine for me to get mine delayed thru exams and then again thru the following holiday a few months later. I think its great the OP's daughter is talking to her about this and not avoiding it. Sign of a good relationship i think.

ditto! i had 10/11 day long periods which were just difficult to manage when i was 14/15. i then went on the pill (mainly for my skin as i had really horrible acne flare ups once a month) - the new 3rd generation pills are so much better than previous versions and have much lower risks. i'm still on the pill now, over 10 years later as i can't afford to lose a week a month for PMT (crying for no reason and horrible pains).

you could try to get her to use tampons anyway - my mum tried before a holiday when i was 14ish and it didn't go well, but i do distinctly remember the 'revelation' of how much more convenient they were when i finally got used to them!

Hi-i'd be quite embarassed if my mom came onto a message board and asked advice for me on this kind of subject! I'm assuming she asked you though.

Personally i'd go to the doctors and ash his/her advice-i have always missed out my 7 day day break in the past as i was on the pill to start with. Be thankfull if you can take a pill-i sadly cant now due to a different health problem. I will now have to just put up with my period if i come on, whilest on holiday. It's not the end of the world though, if you go about it in a positive way. I have always suffered from heavy painfull periods before anyone thinks im being harsh, so i know how horrible they can be!

(just to add-i couldnt get the hang on tampons for a while either, but practice does help)

Best of luck, i hope she has a great holiday. xx

My daughter had the same problem going on a jungle trek in Central america (school trip). The issue was that there were no (repeat NO!) sanitation facilities so it was just more convenient. The doctor was very sympathetic and put her on the pill. (which miraculously cleared up her acne so she's still on it now)

Her age might be a factor for the mooncup not being suitable, depending on erm things I don't want to mention infront of her mum! :D But I have friends who swear by it.

My sister was 17 when she started using a mooncup and she is still a virgin now (at 26). So lots of junior girls do use menstrual cups - in majority of cases hymens are long gone before anything her mum doesn't want to know about happens!

Nothing against OP here but I'd like to know why her daughter wants to stop her period? It' natural for women to have a period and if it were my daughter I would not want her to do anything unnatural.

I do see your point, but I know that at 17 having a period when I was on holiday was so upsetting: I had really heavy periods (so heavy tampons weren't much use) and the most crippling period pains which caused me to throw up. It's not just a not being able to lie on the beach and swim thing. I think that just once it doesn't hurt seeing as she's old enough to be taking a drug like the Pill an no-one bats an eyelid ......
