. Not so much because the pill is 'unnatural', but the medicalisation of a really minor thing.

For some people, periods are anything but 'minor.' Incrediby long, painful and heavy. Not my idea of a fun 2 weeks in the sun.

**Gosh, is it really a big deal? The OP asked for advice, not opinions on whether it's right or wrong - and such a trivial thing to argue against! Her daughter is 17, let her enjoy her holiday without worrying about her period***

thanks for that- it's just that she uses towels and she does get quite heavy and the last thing she wants is to sit by the pool all the holiday, with everyone 'knowing'..
blimey some of the responses ay??
i dont think that her body clock will be out for long and it is good that she came to me and asked me- she is good like that and we talk about everything( thank goodness)
there is no way that i would let her do it for longer then is neccesary so dont worry........ but if she doesnt get along with other sanitary ware then that's her choice really......

Hey I went on something a few years ago as I was due on over my holiday. Being on a skiing holiday we would go the whole day out in the middle of nowhere and there just wasn't the facilities to do the necessities! If you need to pee then you found a bush! Lol

The doctor prescribed some tablets that I needed to take 3 days before I went and then the duration of my trip. It was just like the pill but had no contraceptive effects. I had to take it 3 times a day and it really saved the day!

Hope this helps :) (Doctor said she got people in all the time asking for it)

I did say 'mooncup' a while back, and it's worth saying again. Many people find it completely discreet, not even any string hanging down etc.

Mind you whether she'd want to experiment on holiday is another thing! But worth considering for the future.

Her age might be a factor for the mooncup not being suitable, depending on erm things I don't want to mention infront of her mum! :D But I have friends who swear by it.

I was on the pill for a few years for period control and I used to just continue it rather than have a break if it was going to clash with holidays or Christmas day or something. I prefer not to use drugs if I don't need them but it's no different or more unnatural than taking antihystemines to avoid sneezing all holiday.

Just to add in that the one time I took my pill through a 'break' (again because I was going on holiday) it was horrible. I was bloated and my boobs hurt like hell. I wouldn't do it again for anything. If the doc does give her anything it's worth checking online to see if there are any side effects like this. It was like having pms for the whole month :(

Yes, norethisterone works, I used it for this very reason when I was younger and not already on the pill. Nowadays I just run two pill packets together.

Running pill packets together does make me feel a bit funny towards the end of the second packet (bloating, sore breasts etc) due to the hormone build-up over two months, but your daughter shouldn't get that if she's only taking norethisterone for a week or two.

I couldn't get the hang of tampons for years either, couldn't get them in, then one time I tried and it just worked and I haven't looked back!

I used to hate tampons but quickly got used to them when I had my period around the same time as a holiday (I was about 18, IIRC).

It's not easy at first, but once you've got the hang of it, you're away!

That said, beware of swimming in dirty water with a tampon on - they soak up the water, and you don't want dirty water inside your body!

I suppose for any man reading this thread, this is all a real education!

I went to a wedding and I was due, so took the pill for a few more days. I felt fine and had a lovely day.

I find if you keep taking it without a break, you end up getting breakthorough periods but a one off for a few days can be OK but do check before doing so!
