I know the fault also is with John Lewis as they are selling the product and should of checked the item first.

Do you honestly believe that a shop has the time or resources to check every item they sell? If JL had to open and test everything they sold their prices would double just to pay for staffing costs!

Incidentally, I own a Kindle AND a Nook. My first Kindle died within 2 days, I had it replaced and it's been fine since. You get faulty products in any brand, doesn't make one more inferior than the other.

    Vfish,
I think you make a good point, it may be a server or software issue that can be quickly resolved when the grown ups come in after the weekend. In the meantime I'm holding tight. With so many people experiencing problems I'd have thought they'll want to move pretty quickly to avoid a pr meltdown. Fingers crossed.

No I don't think they would of checked it for you reasons stated but the fault also is in their hands selling a faulty product. I said SHOULD OF which in an ideal world they would and seen there was a fault and sent back to B&N. Am sure Nook will fix the problem asap but there seems to be alot of issues and returns lately which doesn't look good.

I wouldn't mind returning to John Lewis but its a good 2 bus ride away from me and I am on a strict budget this month so cannot afford bus fare and have no one to return it for me.

    RachrbuyD,
to be fair to John Lewis, we don't yet know if the Nooks are faulty or if the problem is on the Barnes and Noble online registration system, or some other part of their technical infrastructure. It may prove to be the case that the actual hardware is not faulty and that JL has sold you a working piece of kit which has been let down by poor technical back up at Barnes and Noble.

At least with John Lewis you shouldn't have a problem returning them should you decide to do so. I'd suggest sitting tight and maybe calling them tomorrow if you are thinking of returning the nook.

Since so many people in different locations are having problems, may I ask if anyone who acquired a nook over the weekend has managed to complete the full registration/set up process?

If the answer is "no" that would more likely point towards it being a BN problem rather than each specific hardware unit (though it doesn't entirely preclude the possibility that every single one is faulty!). If some people are managing to complete the process and others aren't it is more suggestive (but not conclusive) of hardware faults.

I'm in Norwich; got two units from JLewis yesterday both connect to wifi but can't be registered at present.

Thanks for the book depository link up above^^^^

I have to say I'm loving my Nook. Not sure what the problems are that some recent buyers are having, however, I will say that it's the weekend and nothing will be done about it until start of the new week if it is a software problem........... and even at that, give the people a CHANCE to FIX the problem before saying this is awful and not worth the hassel etc.

Out of the 5 Nooks I managed to get, there has been no problems with any of them, I have checked with the people who now have them. 2 of those people had Kindle previously and have said they wouldn't go back to a Kindle now as the Nook so much better. But I suppose different people like different things.

I bought my Nook to read books, not to surf the web etc. It does what it is supposed to do, and I have no complaints. I can go onto he internet without rooting it so that's a bonus, but to be honest I have only done this twice.
As for the free books on the B&N website and credit card details. it;s just like the kindle free books on Amazon, nothing shows up on your credit card statement so I don't know what the problem is there either???

Thanks to the OP for the heads up on this offer. It was a hassle to get my hands on the Nooks themselves, but it was a £30 well spent!

I had one delivered from Very on Friday and only got round to charging it and setting it up today. I'm having the same error message as described above.

I've put it back in the box and will leave it until after work tomorrow to try again. Hopefully, it's just something to do with B & N's end of things that will be fixed tomorrow, as opposed to the actual Nooks themselves being borked.

    Fleago et al,
Just had an online chat with Nook support who confirmed they believe it is a server problem and they have "escalated it to management". I wouldn't expect a fix until after weekend but at least it looks like the machines themselves are probably not the issue here.

Yeah I don't really blame John Lewis but as they sold it then their is some fault at their hands. However does seem to be a server issue I think and hopefully be up and running pretty soon. Suppose B&N didn't know that they would have such huge demands for the Nook I mean its always sold out and so weren't prepared for problems and to resolve them straight away. Guess am just use to problems being solved within 24 hours mostly. I feel bad that I look like am slanting John Lewis and B&N. I am a bit annoyed at B&N and the last thing I want is to be worrying about returning items and it was a gift so am quite embrassed and got my mother moaning.

Am still getting the error :( thought may have been a breakthrough yesterday with loading the sign in page but having network errors.
