To be fair to the Sky installer I was talking to, what he actually said was that we could use 'standard cables that you can pick up from Focus' and then added that we needed to get decent quality ones as the cheaper ones would just break.

Fair enough jo_b, inferior cables probably wouldn't break in the short term, but they will allow interference in, and probably a signal drop as well, also any satellite cable should be made absolutely watertight at the LNB / Dish end to stop water/ moisture ingress.
BTW my post that you quoted was not targetted at you..

You're not likely to get very far unless you are prepared to subscribe to a package (usually 12 month minimum.)I do not want to subscribe any package. Thanks.
If you are hoping to get stuff for free, there has to be something in it for Sky. They aren't going to offer a free Sky Plus box without tying you into a contract, to be honest.

:j I am so pleased Thank you so much for this post :j
Check out this for a good deal
First of all I applied to have sky on line through buzz agent nector offer, giving me 1800 nector points for subscribing to sky.
I then e-mail sky to say that I had for got to mention that a friend had recomended me and could I have the free sky+ box offer.
I got an e-mail back saying no that offer is not vailable on line but as a good will gesture my account had been creditd with £30.
I call sky to say thanks but no thanks, I work shifts so without sky+ I may as well have a free view box. No probs I get passed onto someone else who offers me a brand new sky+box at no extra charge, I also get to keep the £30

This offer will eventually become saturated and they will run out of recon boxes so its more just your luck than anything else... they will now be getting wise as around 1500-2000 people have all of a sudden went nightshift and need a sky+ box.0
