after speaking to someone else on a different phone number i was offered sky+ for £49 but explained that i couldnt afford at the moment and said id phone back once ive decided what to do. hopefully now when i phone up i will get through to someone thats willing to do it for free coz i cant afford £49 at the mo

As you are stuck in a contract with them until November I think the £49 offer was a good one.
You must be spending loads on phone calls alone!

Just been offered a free reconditioned 20gb box and free installment, absolutely no hassle, its arranged for the 11th, however, I did wonder whether I should have gone for the new 80gb box?, should I phone back and say I prefer to pay £49 for the new box....any thoughts?

I was told that the newer boxes are compatible with 'Anytime' while not all of the older boxes are. That helped me decide to spend the extra money.
No harm in calling back and asking for the new kit!

Don't know if how much truth there is in this but it makes sense to me - 3rd hand from a sky engineer via a colleague (or two)

If your installation engineer turns up in a "proper" sky van then it's a sky person who is paid a pretty much flat rate for doing their job. At the end of a period, they get a bonus if there's no call-backs in the work they do. These people will be very careful to do the job right. Quality focus

If your engineer turns up and is a contractor, they're on piece work and will do as many jobs a day as they can. Now this isn't to say they'll do the job any worse, but one would suspect they're on a tighter schedule. Quantity focus. Any post-install issues are swept up by sky engineers.

I've had both types out and they've both done a sterling job, just thought it would be worth knowing if you're having an install and before you sign it off.

  • As an ex-Sky customer we were thinking of going back to them and getting Sky+ but were put off by the cost after watching tv programme about the problems with it. Thanks to these forums, we are now getting it installed free on Friday :) Thanks all

Sorted out Sky + for my dad (existing customer but out of contract) today - no arguing from Sky. Said yes as soon as I asked for it. Had to get him to give them permission to talk to me, mind. They'll be out on Wednesday to install. Free Sky+ box, installation and subscription. He's happy.

Just had our Sky+ fitted this morning, the contractors get £20 per job!!! No wonder they can be miserable.

I had a contractor called Cobra Installations out to install my Sky when i first moved into my new house who done a botch job.

Didnt know until about 1 year later though, when redecorating we noticed the living room wall was very damp to the touch. The very wall that the cable for the Sky box came from.

Took a look at the outside of the building and could see a pretty big hole where the Cobra engineer had drilled through the side of the building for the cable to go through.

Phoned Sky to complain about this and they sent one of their own engineers out to repair the hole. Sky engineer confirmed that water had been getting in through where the cable was and repaired it.

He then informed us that the hole should have been sealed to protect against the wet weather and that there should have been a "Drip loop"
done on the cable to stop water running straight down the cable and into the wall, Which had not been done either and caused the dampness in the wall  He said he was fed up fixing their c**k ups too.

Sky engineer told us to phone Sky Claims Handling Team and Field Esculations and put forward a claim for damage to the building. Which we did , But Sky didnt want to know and told us to contact Cobra direct. So we did, Told them about the damage done to the building and they sent someone out in order to access the damage done.

So they come out the next day to take a look, And we also show them a copy of the report that the Sky Engineer wrote when he made the repairs and agree that we have a case and that they would get back to us.

So we wait and about 1 week or so later we recieve a letter from Cobra stating

    Dear Miss *****,

Re: Damage Claim Relating to Job Number...657???...

I was contacted by Claims Handling Team at Sky Television with a report of damage to your property on ??/??/07.

A representitive from Cobra I nstallations attended your property on ??/??/07 to assess the damage which had been reported.

After a review of your claim Cobra Installations will not be accepting liability for the alleged damage to your property. Our engineer followed all the correct procedures when installing your Sky system and we cannot be held responsible for covers and silicone which come adrift due to considirable period of time and weather conditions.

If you have any further queries please contact Sky Claims Handling Team who will be happy to assist you further.

    Yours sincerely,

Mr (I couldnt care less if the job was not done right) Bryce

Even though we had written proof from the Sky engineer that it was never done properly in the first place:mad:

I just hope that no one else have the problems i've had with there installations a few months down the line because they couldnt care less

Sorry for the long post :o

    :rolleyes2 :naughty:
