There is no reason why not, just as long as you don't mention them being made from "offal". There is nothing wrong with this - it is just the unfashionable bits. If they do ask, just tell them its like a spherical sausage. You could also make it look fun by serving the mash and mushy peas in big round "dollops" to match the faggots! They shouldn't play with their food, but the cook can.

Farmfoods sell Brains faggots, in 2 packs 75p or I think you can get 2 x 4 packs for £2.00.

Originally from Coventry where a popular dish from so called "batch bars" was a faggot and mushy pea batch. In other words a soft bread roll with faggots and mushy peas on. Been years since I had one, but I used to love them when I was younger. Can be a bit messy though.
  • DP came home with six large butchers faggots. Have always had the frozens ones so no idea how to cook them any idea appreciated. Will it be ok to freeze them as six are to many for one meal .
  • I bought some of these recently and they were deeeeelish! (but very filling - ours were very big - if I remember we had 2 each, and that was loads!)

Also - same as you, I had only ever had the frozen ones, so I used this recipe for the gravy (NB the recipe also includes making the faggots themselves, so I just ignored that bit)

    Hi all, :)

I've just added your post onto an earlier one which has a few recipes and tips listed.

You obviously won't need the "make faggots" bits but there are cooking times plus plenty of gravy ideas to choose from.

Posts are listed in date order so you'll need to read from the beginning.

    Good luck :)

This is in my 'frugal recipe' file. I have no idea where it came from and I've never made it, but it looks nice.

    Faggots in rich brown gravy
    with Pease Pudding

    Makes around 10 faggots
    INGREDIENTS
    12oz (350g) of pigs' liver
8 oz (225g) belly of pork
    2 onions
    a little chopped sage
    2oz (50g) fresh breadcrumbs
    1 beaten egg
    1 teaspoon of salt
    1/4 teaspoon of black pepper
1 pigs caul (from an obliging 'real' butcher if you are lucky, if not finely slice some fat streaky bacon and lay over the top)
Finely chop the liver, belly of pork sage and onions Mix the above with the breadcrumbs, salt and peppers Wet your hands! Form the mixture into round egg sized faggots. Cut the caul into pieces and wrap around each faggot like a blanket. You can also flatten these and make them look more like crepinettes if you wish. Arrange the faggots closely on a baking tray Cover with well buttered baking foil Bake at 180C / 350F Gas Mark 4 for around 45 minutes To test: pierce the faggots to see if the juices run clear Turn the oven up a little to brown their tops Traditionally served hot with recently simmered soft green peas and gravy There are also many variations of how to make faggots including adding finely chopped apples, nutmeg, only liver with no belly pork and so on
    .
    For the Gravy
    1 large onion sliced
    Tablespoon plain flour
    Dark sherry
    bacon fat
    Water and stock cube
Fry the onions in the bacon fat until dark brown, stir the flour into the onion fat and work until smooth. Season to taste and add 1 tablespoon dark sherry and 1 pint water gradually until the consistency is to your liking. Some people like to add a stock cube as well but it depends on taste (and region) Faggots can taste very rich and warming and in early spring when the weather can be wicked they make a great meal after a lot of gardening when you are feeling somewhat ravenous.

I've been using up all the stuff from the freezer and day before yesterday used 'normal' liver for liver and onions in slow cooker.

Have got a tub of chicken livers in the freezer, do you think they would work ok

I don't see why not. I bet the first faggots were made using up stuff that people had. This would mean they were never the same twice. It is also a way of making a little go a long way by adding breadcrumbs. Give it a go, chicken livers are nice anyway.
