oh dear i wish i hadn't read this thread now! i love faggots, i knew they had liver in them (which i can't abide on it's own) but wasn't aware of the pigs heart - urghhhh i will have to block that out next time i eat them - and no, i def won't be making my own!!0

I don't think all faggots necessarily have heart in them
Recipes vary.The one in the link just uses liver.

I got a recipe recently from the local butchers for faggots. They're made into balls and cooked in an onion gravy for about 1 1/2 hours. Will look later and post the recipe. Might not be an authentic recipe (and according to my retired butcher FIL, it's not) but they taste delicicous.0

Braised faggots with onion gravy
1 lb minced beef
4oz lambs liver
4oz streaky bacon
1 small onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed
1 tbsp freshly chopped parsley
2tsp fresh thyme leaves
2tsp freshly chopped sage
2oz fresh white or brown breadcrumbs
salt/pepper
For the onion gravy
1tbsp sunflower oil
2 large onions, peeled and finely chopped
1tbsp plain flour
1/2 pint ale
1 pint beef stock
dash worcestershire sauce
2tsp mixed herbs
Make onion gravy:
Heat oil in saucepan, add onions and cook for 4-5 mins over moderate heat. Add flour and cook for 2 mins, stirring occasionally. Add ale, stock, worcestershire sauce, seasoning and dried mixed herbs. Add gradually to prevent lumps. Reduce heat and simmer for 5 mins.
Faggots:
Mix all ingredients for faggots in a large bowl and shape into golf ball sized pieces. I made about 14.
Put faggots into a 2 pint roasting tin or dish, and pour the gravy over carefully. Cover with foil and cook in a preheated oven (gas 4 180 electric) for 1 1/2 to 2 hours. 15 minutes or so before the end of your cooking time, remove the foil and put tin back in the oven. Enjoy!!

Should anyone be trying to get hold of Caul Fat I have found it in Greek/Cypriot type shops where you can get it frozen/chilled or Vac packed - It goes under the name of "Banna" and a 500g pack will make hundreds of Faggots/Sheftalia and leave enought to make some lace curtains too!
For the unitiated it is not really caul per se but is really "Sheep Tripe" I.E. the stomach lining.

Okay - this is THE faggot appreciation thread!
I'm rather partial to Mr Brain's faggots - and was lucky enough to find them on offer last month (50% free, plus BOGOF) so I stocked up... I'm down to my last two boxes in the freezer and both are on my menu plan for this week :eek:
My butcher makes faggots - but they do not taste like Mr Brain's. There are rather a few recipes on 'here' - but do any of them replicate the rather addictive taste of Mr Brain's faggots in a rich West Country sauce?
I'm not sure I can continue to feed our 'habit'so I'm enlisting your help!
I've listed the links to the faggot posts - Have any of you made them? ... Do they taste like Mr Brain's? ...Does anyone have 'the' recipe? ....

After seeing the faggots mentioned on the weekly menu list thread was just talking to my OH about faggots and he can't believe I've never tried faggots before!! I did a google search which came up with BBC food recipe for them but to be honest I wasn't sure I wanted to after seeing what went into them but Mr Brain's ones only have pork liver and rind which all sounds yummy!! I've told him we're having them next week, I presume I serve them with mash, peas, onions and gravy?DFW Nerd no. 496 - Proud to be dealing with my debts!!0

I love them served with mash and peas - although I don't think there is enough gravy in the Mr Brain's ones - we cope, as I think they are just lovely!

Very sorry - but I can't stand them............. However DH is a Black Country boy and loves them!!!!! And Brains are the ones he loves with chips and peas or mash and peas.
