At the time my eldest son was due to have the MMR triple vaccine, there was all the worry and debate going on about whether it was safe or not.

My ex had measles as a child and suffered side effects from it. We decided that we wouldn't risk our son being exposed to any horrendous illnesses, that had the potential of causing serious health effects, disability or death.

We didn't feel that there was enough evidence to suggest that it would be unwise to go ahead and have him vaccinated. I am no expert but to me every child should be vaccinated against potentially life threatening diseases.
The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.

They are all well tested. Do you even have an idea of how long these trials last and what you need to do to get FDA approval to sell? Please link the scientific journals that say MMR is a risk, because scientific journals are the only valid reference material for this subject.

That doesn't mean the odd one won't slip through with some adverse event, but MMR isn't one of them. The claims made have been laughed out of court. In fact one of the primary reasons for the triple jag was reduced infection rates. Think about it do you think drug companies want to sell you three expensive drugs or just one?

Do you actually know how long the MMR was tested for before it was licensed?
  • You can pay for 3 indivial injections like Tony Blair did in the limelight of the "autism/MMR scare" it is sad an epidemic has broken out down to 1 individual who decided not to immunise their child because of the "side effects", i would like to see the stats of the people who are unfortunately ill owing to this epidemic and see how many are in actual fact classed as Autistic - scaremongering then and still now!

This sounds like Dr Aitken who runs his practice from a refurbed corner shop and also makes his living out of giving Botox injections to daft women.

Wrong doctor......;) but why let the facts get in the way?

I wonder how many of the people in Swansea (and elsewhere) who have previously refused the MMR jab because it is "3 vaccines in one", have already had their children immunised from the ages of 8 weeks onwards with the diptheria, tetanus, polio, pertussis and Hib vaccine? (Or "5-in-1" as it is commonly known.)

I don't recall reading any posts from anyone who has refused those!

I did. Mine had separate jabs on the NHS for selected vaccines in that group.

Not long enough as 2of the 3 strains of the vaccinations were recalled and stopped being used after 4 years as there was a link to them causing some form of meningitis

I wasn't so much arguing that drug safety testing does not work, just that whatever evidence we have today may or may not be the case in years to come. As someone said, we can only go by what we know today.

You mention instinct and intuition. Maybe it's this that's stopping some parents getting their kids vaccinated, I don't know. Or it could just be fear, because of what they've been told about the MMR jab. Once that fear is in someone's mind it's hard to get rid of.

For me, it was the reaction youngest son had to the first MMR and middle son to his booster....youngest did not have his booster MMR.

Two of mine have had the first and booster MMR, it failed in eldest as he has now had mumps three times!

I must admit to being in a quandry though over this latest outbreak, youngest does have a poor immune system complicated by severe asthma but his reaction to his original MMR was so stark that it scares the living daylights out of me to think of him finally having the booster all these years later (he is 15) but then, it also scares the living daylights out of me at the possibility of him getting measles....

We made the decision for youngest to not have the booster originally based on our experience, not any of the research and we honestly thought we were doing the best for our child bearing in mind the severe reaction he had to the first jab.

** Just for extra information, all three boys received all other innoculations at the appropriate time.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

I had the first jab but not the booster because after the first jab I had a terrible reaction and was rushed to hospital, and the DRs advised my mother to not give me the booster. Nothing to do with autism fears.

At uni there was a mumps outbreak, and because I knew I hadnt had the booster I took extra precautions. I didnt get it, but lots of those who had the jab DID get it.

My whole worry with this media scaremongering is that vaccinations arent the 100% solution. People will have the jab and think that's it they're safe, when in fact vaccinations work on the principle that they will work for enough people that it doesnt spread. I'm not anti-vaccination, I've had all the others I've ever needed... but I wish that alongside all these fears they would promote good hygeine practices and inform people of the symptoms so that when people do get these illnesses they are appropriately quarantined early.

The MMR is 95% effective after one dose at preventing measles, less effective for Mumps and Rubella.

No, they're not 100%, and not everybody can be vaccinated so you're absolutely right that herd immunity is the goal we're aiming at to get rid of these viruses completely. That's how things like polio, smallpox and diptheria have vanished.
