I'm assuming RTB is 'Right to Buy', so perhaps an ex-council flat.
  • Yep its an ex local authority house.

Ive been in it ten years. Ive done all sorts to make it look nice.

Spoke to the Halifax and they werent sure, so I need to ring another number and see what they say.

The only caveat on the right to buy paperwork was not to be resold within 5 years.

    We shall see.

  • Oh right! Thanks for that I would never have guessed that one. If you've stayed put for 10 years I don't see a problem ...but then I don't really know much about these things, good luck! x

  • Sorry you were treated badly 'on the other side'. I often wonder why people feel the need to be mean and judgemental, I think I am missing those genes!

Hope Halifax (eventually) come up with the answers you need Xx

At least you stayed in the house for 10 years before exercising your RTB. My friends neighbours moved in & as soon as they qualified for RTB, they bought the house.

  • Looka I never expected to remarry. My soulmate came along. Unfortunately, hes built like Hagrid. He is a big bloke, we have big dogs and our kids are tall (currently DD2 is 5 foot 9) so I had started all this is 2007, thats when I first found out HE had not bought me out. I haddnt even met the lovely Mr Skint at that point!
The trouble is, my lovelies, I am not a victim, I have bloody survived and I will rise to the top. I have made loads of mistakes but hey, I have learned from them, we all have.

All I wanted was some advice, and I am left feeling like I have been trolled.

I shall go get a bath and have a glass of the old rioja!!!

  • Please don't go. Well miss you.
  • Hi SBO. I've just read the thread you started on the subject - try not to don't take things too hard. RTB has always been a highly controversial subject and opinions vary considerably.

You may remember that when the policy was first introduced by the Conservative Government in the 1980s it caused uproar, however, it was massively popular with about 90,000 properties being sold in the first year.

At that time, it served a number of ideological purposes for the Conservatives. In particular, spreading home ownership, which was regarded then as critical to individuals' economic self-sufficiency. I appreciate that people may feel differently now as some consider that RTB is contributing to a housing crisis in many areas. However, that was why the policy was introduced at that time.

I would say you are acting in line with the purpose of the policy and within the law. We all make the best decisions we can at the time based on the circumstances and the information available to us. Your circumstances have changed and you need to make a new decision now - the best one for you and your family. Once a house is sold, it is sold (whoever the seller). It becomes the property of the buyer who has the right to manage that asset in their own economic interests.

Remember, everyone is going to have an opinion on this and some are more able to express themselves appropriately than others. Don't let that put you off using the Forum - you have as much right to be here as any of us.
