I believe that "Manila" honey works and my mission is to find the best price.0 -
'works'
Seems it is used as a cure all without any real specifics.0 -

surely it's about value too. I don't believe it's good value even at some of the 'bargain' prices. It's good to be fully informed
But i wouldn't try and stop you buying it, your choice, just trying to enable you to make an informed choice about bargains0 -
To counter a previous comment on this thread, proper manuka honey does cost more than other honeys to harvest. The areas are more remote to get to, the plants flower for only a few weeks, and are more spread out. For eg South Island beekeepers in NZ for other honey types can get more than 10 times the quantity of honey form each hive compared to manuka hives in North Island.
However biggest influence on price of proper Manuka honey comes down to supply and demand.
Many people are are probably caught out paying for Manuka when a local or regular honey will be just as good for their needs. However genuine Manuka is proven (and by UK scientists such as from Cardiff University) to contain an additional antibacterial property above what is found in regular honey.
But much of the labeled 'Manuka' being sold does not contain that extra property, and so people are being doubly caught out - paying over the top for a brand that contains nothing special at all.
Do a range of research , and the truth is available.
If you've got a spare 10 mins, then here is a video from a tv news story done in NZ a few years ago about it:

Don't buy Manuka if you don't like the price of the proper stuff, or for many people when a regular honey will fit your purpose. Support some of the British beekeepers whose honey will do what many people want (eg making a lemon honey drink). But for those who do want / need the extra properties, better to make sure you are getting a correct brand.
It's a commercial site but there is some information that is free to read here: http://www.newzealandhoneyshop.co.uk/manuka-five-top-tips.html0 -
Further studies have shown that some UK honey is just as good as Manuka.
