i don't know if anyones interested in this...

its active 20+ manuka honey capsules £15, for those (like me) who can't stand the taste of honey but still would like to try manuka for the benefits

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00669GUTY/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=AYHIDCM8MEZBT

I've been following this thread with interest as everyone I know rates Manuka honey. I too am taking these capsules because a. I don't like the taste of honey and b. 90 capsules for around £17 delivered (got mine from ebay) seeemed a good deal. From reading this thread it seems that these capsules are not UMF rated and that the 20+ is misleading as its not the UMF that its referring to but something else, peroxide something (an earlier post explains it).
However I will continue to take them as I do believe honey is healing. But once finished will stick to UMF rated products even if it means having to eat it as I have not found any Manuka honey capsules with the UMF logo.

Although I've known of the benefits of Manuka honey for a few years now, the one I have is only a 6+ as I wasn't aware of all the differences. I also spoke to a local beekeeper at a craft fayre years ago where he was selling his honey (although he worked locally but lived about 10-15 miles away so don't know if this can be classed as local for the pollen the bees use - wouldn't think so) but he explained the benefits of locally produced honey for anyone who suffers from allergies eg hayfever which one of my sons suffers from every year. I can't remember if it helped at all so possibly did not maybe because not local enough pollen to build the immunity. I've learned a lot from reading this thread so thanks to everyone and you will never get everyone agreeing on this topic as everyone has their own opinion which is good as debating brings up various points of interest.

Anyway I'm looking for a bit of advice from all you good MSErs. I had a cold at the end of February/beginning of March then 3 weeks laters took a sore throat with flu symptoms and felt better as the week went on but 4 weeks later had flu symptoms again with sore throat. My throat had been sore on and off all these weeks but never quite getting better. Behind tonsils were showing white and I gargled regularly to clear this but if I tried not gargling for 2-3 days it came back. Went to doc eventually and he decided to arrange a blood test to check white blood cells and everything came back normal which was good. It's just been very persistent and my throat is a lot better but still a tiny bit sore. It's left me with a really stuffed up nose and more so at night when lying down as it obviously can't drain the same then. What I was wondering is why it's better to take Manuka honey on toast or a cracker as we always were given it as children if we had a sore throat and told to let it lie as long as possible in the throat. When eating a cracker it goes right down quickly past the throat. I understand that the benefit is from having it within your body but I would have thought to swallow it slowly on it's own would coat the throat a little also and might be better for a sore throat. I would appreciate comments on this as I'm trying to work it out logically.

Also - now I feel a daftie asking this question lol! Would it help my nose if I use a cotton bud and push some honey up my nostrils as I feel that there is inflammation in my nose as sometimes it feels so stuffed up and won't blow so just wondering if there is inflammation? It's so annoying and wakens me so many times during the night and I have to then try to blow to clear it. I've got the oil from a Karvol capsule dripped onto a tissue and sitting on second pillow behind me to try to help. Each time I waken I put Vicks vapour rub below and at the sides of my nose. I waken with an incredibly dry mouth and I think this is now what is making my throat feel slightly sore with mouth breathing because of my nose.

Normally I only take a cold once a year and get over it very quickly as I have always had good immunity against colds it seems, so this is unusual for me. Last year I had 3 courses of antibiotics (flucloxacillin) for Staphylococcus aureus (the 3rd one being prescribed by the hospital for a full 2 weeks without a break and it seemed to get rid of it eventually as I was treating it with cream from a different GP for 2 years but I should have kept returning instead of just asking for another tube of cream). Anyway it just got worse and worse until my new GP, after 2 courses of Flucloxacillin and it just returning once finished a few days, decided to refer me to the hospital. The hospital put a camera up my nose and sent me a letter as well as my GP to say that it was a heavy growth of Staphylococcus aureus. I'm just wondering if having 3 courses has slowed down my immune system even although my results were normal. I would like to try a better strength of Manuka with UMF now and hope that putting it up my nostrils will help to take the stuffed up feeling away. I would appreciate any help. Many thanks.

Aldi do a jar of Active 10 Manuka honey 250ml for £3.99. They always used to have the opaque type which my husband doesn't like but now they do the clear one:j

I am unable to ascertain Aldi manuka 10+ comes from New Zealand. Can someone who has tried different honeys please confirm that Aldi ones are of reasonable quality.
  • My 'study' lol was done on the sly when the lab was quieter in the middle of doing other tests. 2 standard 64 square plates were used seeded with S. Aureus. Temperatures were normal growing room. I used 64 discs per plate instead of holes. I followed the same parameters they did at Waikato Univ. Of course no papers were written. I was just satisfying my own curiosity as what I saw blew my mind. Can't remember which antibiotics were used but would have been specifically against S. Aureus and done as close to the originals carried out at the Uni. as possible.

Using up the nose? - I have no idea - although we use on plasters on arms legs etc. Ailey - try gargling with Tea tree in water & spitting out - it'll sooth your throat. There's nothing wrong with letting Manuka slide down throat although 6+ isn't much good at anything - far too weak & that's if it's proper UMF honey.

Aldi honey - sadly it now just says 10+ active, the one I saw yesterday indicated nothing like UMF or NPA so it's unlikely to be any good any more. I'm SO annoyed at these suppliers!

Thanks WishI'dReadSooner. Because my nose was all crusted and sore I decided to try it after I wrote my message and one hour later I noticed when I touched the outside of my nose that the soreness had gone. I think it helped soften the crusting also as it's feeling a good bit better today. But I should have known better than to take 3 teaspoons of honey in one day as I was borderline diabetic 2½ years ago and managed to lose over 2 stone and have kept it down which helps to keep the diabetes at bay along with watching sugars and fats (and exercising which I've been hopeless at during the winter but due to get out walking soon now that there is the hint of heat from the sun!). I buy kits from EBay to let me test my blood glucose levels and without these I would possibly have turned diabetic. Anyway, after taking the honey, I was up at the bathroom 3 times during that night and normally only up once so this made me test my blood glucose before breakfast and it had shot up to 5.9 (under 5.5 is non diabetic) and I've been keeping it under 5.0. I tested again this morning and it had returned to 4.8 so that was rather silly of me taking the honey. I might have got away with one teaspoon after taking carbohydrates to save a sudden rise in blood sugar. I do love honey too but never eat it now. Maybe if I had just put some on a cotton bud and put that in my nostrils but not eaten each teaspoonful, then that might have been okay. I've learned by that though! Just a wee warning to anyone else who is/has been borderline diabetic.

No. Just -no. Really poor. I won't tell you what particularly gives you away, but this is complete nonsense.
  • It's been a LONG time since I worked in Microbiol and a LONGER time since I found Manuka. I've worked in the alternative health field for probably longer than you've been working. I've also probably forgotten lots more than you know.

I regularly testing the killing efficiency of antibiotics on agar plates - back then we used manual micrometers, I notice now the hard work is done by optical computers. When I started work the results of the 64 sample agar assays were laboriously transferred onto computer TAPE in binary code and sent off for analysis as the massive onsite computer building didn't have sufficient computer power to give results.

Times change & I suggest you qualified at a far later time. I'm NOT a liar!

What a horrid comment to someone who is only trying to help others!

I think 'WishI'dReadSooner' is telling the truth and, as he/she says, it is a long time since he/she worked in the lab and many jobs have changed drastically over the years due to computerisation and changes in procedures generally but because Haffiana sounds as if he/she works in a lab currently, it certainly will be a much different job now, but doesn't require being nasty to others or calling them liars in a round about way. WishI'dReadSooner has detailed many things which many of us wouldn't be able to detail, not having worked in a lab.

Nope. No cigar. Do you imagine that microbiology varies because of counting techniques?

Have you spotted your amazing give-away huge error yet? The one that shows that you just copied a few words from a scientific report? You don't even have a clue what it might be, do you? Really, it is basic 'O' level Biology...

Having read this thread I'm wanting to get some to try on my 10 year old who has a persistent cough( not asthma related!)
Do you think this is a good one to go for?
