The better money saving tip would be not to buy at all, as there is no clear evidence that this is effective for anything other than wound dressing.

What a load of bull - there's plenty of evidence out there! When I researched it MANY years ago the evidence was overwhelming. Now it takes forever to get past the hype & sales patter. Having trained as a microbiologist the effectiveness of manuka against most other antibiotics was astounding - looking at the agar plates - which I'm well used to using.

Try looking at Christie hospital where they use on cancer patients.
It KILLS MRSA - one of the few really effective treatments. It also CURES acid reflux - I cured myself of dreadful acid reflux by using instead of those AWFUL prazoles that can cause lots of problems including very bad hip problems. Specialist told me to put bed up on bricks at top end - REALLY! It's a shame that so many people including specialists rely on pharmaceuticals to MASK the problem. Manuka CURES it instead of masking it!

HOWEVER Active 6+ is NO good. You do need active 10+ or better. Active 10+ works on just about everything but active 5+ or 6+ does nor have enough MF factor to be really effective.

And you will find that 6+ is only effective for wound dressing. That's what is on sale, and that is what I commented on.
There are effective uses in the right strength but the claims that are made by H & B are not backed by clear evidence.

What the science says about manuka honey

Several studies suggest manuka honey is effective when used on top of wounds and leg ulcers. Studies also show it's effective in fighting infection and promoting healing.
Not all studies show that it helps to heal ulcers, and there is concern that manuka honey may actually delay healing in people who have ulcers related to diabetes.
A major review of evidence by The Cochrane Review notes that honey may shorten healing times in mild burns compared with traditional dressings. However, honey dressings do not increase leg ulcer healing at 12 weeks even when used with compression wraps.
Another study suggests that manuka honey may be effective in preventing gingivitis and other periodontal disease by reducing the build-up of plaque.

In 2010, the scientific steering committee of the US National Cancer Institute approved a proposal for the use of manuka honey for the reduction of inflammation of the oesophagus associated with chemotherapy.

Another possible benefit of honey is that, unlike antibiotics, it has not been reported to cause development of resistant bacteria. These so-called 'superbugs' develop after repeated exposure to common antibiotics. They require special antibiotics to treat them.

An NHS assessment of manuka honey to help tackle MRSA in April 2011 says, "the effectiveness of honey in combination with antibiotics has yet to be tested in clinical trials and further research is still needed to assess whether it could be used to treat drug-resistant infections".

Wow I am going to have a bit more of a look into this there's obviously a lot more to it that I realised, thanks for the more detailed info :)

It appears from the OP post that other strenghts are on offer too. I don't believe that 5+ or 6+ aren't effective. It's still honey, very tasty honey so if 5+ is not effective then all other ordinary ( not manuka) honey are not effective either. I just don't believe that. I've heard of manuka probably 7 years ago but since I know for myself honey was always good for you.
  • I've just bought a 15+ from amazon to give it a try kids have asthma I have allergies that we just can't narrow down and acid well yes I get plenty of that.
Nothing ventured nothing gained as they say.

Well, I tend to get horrendous sore throats & the only thing that I have found that stops them worsening & lessens the pain is Manuka +10. Its WONDERFUL!! (Just wished I liked the taste of honey ;)

As a beekeeper id seriously think and get some local honey. Its been proven that most have similar properties as manuka plus if you put a teaspoon a day in water (warm or cold) it helps with pollen allergies.

A big jar of honey is around £4.20-£6 try to get it as local as possible though as this will give you the best results (raw unheated/unfiltered honey is best which you will only get local not from mass producers, even this manuka stuff imported gets filtered and heated to some extent).

If you are in doubt where to get them try local farm shops, corner shops and failing that email your counties beekeeping association asking where you can get some.

My old auntie used to say "Put honey on it" for anything from a blister to a broken leg that became infected.

I'm beginning to wonder if she wasn't so mad after all.
