Haven't read through the enitire thread because TBH I got fed up reading 'Yes it is' ' No it isn't'.
I do not have what you could call a permanent place of work ( as in a building) although I am allocated one. I may work at different locations or I may be working at my allocated building (hope that's easy enough to understand so far!!!) It is very rare that I would start working at one building and need to drive to the other one on the same day.
I rang my Insurance company re whether I should have Business Insurance or not and was basically told it was up to me so I decided to take it out just in case and therefore have peace of mind. The increase in premium was minimal but, as I have Business Insurance, i am able to claim Tax Relief (via P87) on the mileage I drive when I am NOT working at my allocated building ; this can be back-claimed for 6 years. The £2500 cheque I got and the increase in my Tax Code more than pays for the premium increase!!!Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those affected (Benjamin Franklin) JFT96...YNWA0 -
my supervisor has now got back to me and said
"as far as the insurance is concerned, business class insurance i think is for the likes of salesmen travelling to various places in one day. sd and p to one place of work is adequate as you only travel to one destinafion and then collect a company car to drive. you are not continually driving your car around."
so another who doesnt know the situation.
Your supervisor is talking about class 3 use, which you do not need. You require business class 1.0 -
Why are you asking your supervisor for insurance advice? Your employer was also in the wrong for offering advice.
i asked my supervisor who i needed to speak to, but she wasnt in yesterday so i phoned admin to put me through to relevant person
she was back in today, read my email and respondedAccording to your tax thread, you seem to accept that you need business use so just get on with it.
its not a matter of whether i accept it but whether the terminology the insurance industry use could be better chosen
wouldnt it be less confusing to refer to what i do as commuting to more than a single location rather than business travel0 -

thanks for your input but surely there has to be more to it than just taking out business class insurance. As someone suggested earlier hmr and c are not interested in what car insurance cover you have, are they?0 -
Any chance of a consistent story, OP?i work for one company but can be based at any of three of their locations on different days of the week. When i go to a particular loaction i stay there all day - and do not travel between the various locations.
so on monday i may commute to location A - be there all day then go home
on tursday i may be at location B - be there all day and go home etci went through comparison site for car insurance. in job description i entered driver and a list appeared. nothing seemed to exactly match so i put ambulance driver and bought the policy. my job involves driving doctors to visit patients out of hours.Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman0 -
i asked my supervisor who i needed to speak to
I think you are missing the point here. It is up to you to establish your needs and buy appropriate insurance. What the rest of the population know or understand is entirely irrelevant.its not a matter of whether i accept it but whether the terminology the insurance industry use could be better chosenwouldnt it be less confusing to refer to what i do as commuting to more than a single location rather than business travel
refer to it however you want – doesn’t change anything
Someone on the tax thread quoted LV as Social, domestic, pleasure and commuting to permanent place(s) of work
On the Aviva quote engine - Covers social, domestic and pleasure and also covers driving to and from a single place of work in any one day.
Direct Line automatically include business use for the policyholder so no need to worry about what commuting means.0 -

HMRC are not interested in what type of cover you have. ie just because you have Business Use does not necessarily mean you are entitled to claim the mileage allowance . However when I claimed the mileage allowance I had to provide proof that I was insured for Business Use.....you'll note the subtle difference!!!!!Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those affected (Benjamin Franklin) JFT96...YNWA0 -
Why even ask your supervisor – it is not her responsibility – it is yours.
i didnt ask my supervisor i asked who i needed to speak to who dealt with insurance so i could check whether i could claim business mileageI think you are missing the point here. It is up to you to establish your needs and buy appropriate insurance. What the rest of the population know or understand is entirely irrelevant.
if large proportion of the population in my situation think that commuting insurance is adequate then that is not irrelevant. its a problem the industry should address. they must surely want to make it as easy as possible for people to get the correct cover. mixing up commuting with business travel does not seem to me the best way to go about itThe insurance industry doesn’t need to change its terminology. If a term isn’t defined in your policy then the dictionary definition applies.
then why class something that is commuting as business travel?0 -
Can I suggest you read the title you gave this thread?
sdp&c but then going to a meeting after work at another location
Do you honestly think that constitutes commuting?
If so, I bow out of this thread. Plenty of people have tried to help but you seem to have made this a problem in your head.0
