You know i think its a fairly sad reflection on society when being honest is not the default reaction.

Unless it's an incredibly chaotic place, I'm amazed this hasn't been picked up already..

I'm not. I dont think many main dealers will do an instant reconciliation by the admin department, usually they are batch processed at week end.

Don't agree motorguy, that hasn't happened in the last twenty years in places big or small.

    Honesty is the best policy.

But I would ask for a tank of fuel and think that you would have more chance of getting it from them if you point out their mistake instead of waiting for them to chase you.

And who would be authorising the 'freebie'? Answer - someone higher up the chain, thus it becomes an escalation.

Salesman to Sales Manager - "would it be ok if i gave a customer a £200 freebee as i cocked up and didnt charge them for the car they just bought?"

Yeah thats going to work out well for the salesman.

Fine. Bend over backwards to help the incompetent salesman then. Sheesh.

Have you never made an honest mistake?

I have! And sorry but to get someone who ever they are into bucket loads of trouble ?

After all the dealership are within their rights to ask for full payment. Or to take the car back.

You'd have they would have picked this up at the end of the day when they tally up whats gone through the machine.

I'd let them sweat a few days. Accounts will speak to the sales manager, the salesmanager will speak to your sales person and they will then get on the phone to you.

Sure if you told them you wanted to check you accounts to make sure it hadn't gone through then turned up a few days later they would breath a collective sigh of relief and hopefully fill the tank up or something similar as a thank you for coming in. The sales manager may well then clip the sales person round the ear in an open all hours style!

As far as a legal stand point you've not paid for the car so its not really yours. They would be within their rights to demand payment or come and collect it from you.

All I said was why waste paid-for minutes on your mobile to correct the mistake of corrupt sales staff when you could wait till they phone you?

Jeez - on virtually every other thread, the sales staff are the enemy. Make your minds up.

Just wondering, if he hasn't paid for the car and so doesn't own it, will his insurance be valid if he has named himself as the cars owner?

Also to those saying it's the dealers mistake, well yes, the dealer made a mistake, but so did the OP by not checking the amount on the PIN machine, it always says 'check amount and enter pin'. Unless the OP DID see it and thought about trying to wing it but is now having an attack of conscience.

Of course this could all be a wind up, the figures are a bit too perfect. A car that costs £10100 and he only put down a £100 deposit, leaving a nice round £10000 for the last to 0's to be missed off. :D

Corrupt sales staff? The salesperson made a big mistake and undercharged the customer, so where's the corruption in that?
