OP didn't say they left the trolley 40 yards away. Just that when they got to their CAR 40 yards away they noticed the bag was missing. EDIT - posted while OP was posting.
OP - was it windy? Could the bag have blown away?0 -

Customer services are unwilling to give me a refund/gift vouchers or free replacement. I am fuming! They say it was nicked outside the store area. The supermarket's car park constitutes as the store area!
What shall I do if Asda are unable to refund either back to my card or gift vouchers or replacement?
I'm not surprised they wont refund. In fact, I'm surprised that you think they should.
Once you paid for the items they became your property. So why should Adsa pay you for your property being nicked?
What should you do? Be more aware in future I'm afraid.
Have you called the Police? I don't expect they will be able to do much but sometimes there are known thieves in and around shopping centres and the like. They might just have someone sat in a cell right now with bags of stuff they were nicked with.Herman - MP for all!0 -
OP if you had been walking round town after buying something from lets say 'Next' and it got pinched, would you also go back into 'Next' and demand a free replacement?
I think i already know the answer to that.............Yes.0 -

I did not mention about my trolley being abandoned 40 yards from myself in the OP.
Sorry, I misread that bit, not that I have any idea how far away 40 yards is anyway.
Although, if your trolley were that close to you I'm surprised you or your friend didn't notice someone walk up to it.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -

You see how that is entirely different to walking of leaving your shopping 40 yards behind you?
Or they may have had the bottle replaced because on that occasion the person working on the till didn't follow the policy and put more in the bag than they should have. OP seems very quick to judge this other customer and slow to think about her own responsibilities!
I really don't understand how anyone would feel entitled to a refund/replacement of goods that were stolen after purchase. Once you have bought something it is yours as is the responsibility to keep it safe from theft!Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!0
