Go to Tools > Internet Options and click Advanced
Scroll down to Security and untick TLS 1.1 and 1.2 as their server doesn't support it

Now this was very strange. Earlier on today I made sure that nothing was ticked other than SSL3 and TLS1 but still it did not work.

I have just tried unticking both boxes, closing IE and then opening it again and reticking the boxes, then closing and reopening.

    Now it works!

Thanks to everyone for their help.

A bit like that myself but with it only being one single site that I don't use often nowadays, I was prepared to let it.

    Thanks again.

    Excellent!

Unchecking only TLS 1.2 did the trick for me. I hadn't realised just how little support the protocol has amongst browsers and websites.

The support is likely to increase as server software gets updated.

Thank you so much for fathoming out this problem - I use Windows 8 in a VM on my MacBook and use firstdirect to log in to all my online accounts and Nationwide has been "down" for weeks - I've just unticked the TLS options and its working again
  • I'm quite surprised they haven't had developers fix it by now.

I would suspect a proportion of their customers would have been bending their ear about it.

I'm struggling with their website again today. I reallly don't want to clear my cookies and things as I find them too useful.
