Thanks everyone! My period's first day was August 11 (I have a long and irregular cycle) which would make me six weeks then. But I'm sure I'm only about two 'real' weeks on.

Glad all my symptoms are normal - I've gone from being delighted to being petrified! I have no idea about any of this at all! When I tell work, when I tell friends, it's all a big mystery!

Can anyone recommend any good books to read?

  • If i were you I would go to the library, very MSE and it will save you getting obsessed about one book. No one book has all the answers;)
One of the funniest i read was one my Mum had which was first published in the 1950s!
Dont worry about dates they check that at the first scan.
IMHO dont tell work yet unless there are health and safety issues, and I didnt tell anyone til 12 weeks.
BTW if you can eat avocados or dried prunes (these are my weapons of choice!) to keep your bowel moving if it needs a little help, you don't want to be constipated too much later on

Skinty, this will explain why they work out the dates as they do...

Why is there a difference between my official week of pregnancy and the length of time my baby has been developing?

You may notice that there is a difference of about 2 weeks between the length of time your baby has been developing and your 'official' week of pregnancy. We haven't gone crazy; there is a method to our madness!

We actually calculate weeks of pregnancy by counting from the first day of your last menstrual period, which we assume was exactly 40 weeks before your due date. As you don't ovulate (and therefore can't conceive) until approximately two weeks after the start of your menstrual cycle, the length of time that your baby has actually been developing is two weeks less than the number of weeks you have been officially pregnant. To put it in a more straight forward way - when you reach your 40th week of pregnancy your baby will only have been developing for 38 weeks.

This is a method commonly used to calculate EDDs by those in the medical profession, as for most it is usually much easier to recall the first day of your last menstrual period than to know exactly when you ovulated. So, it’s much simpler for everyone to count forward from their last period, although this does mean that technically for the first two official weeks of your pregnancy you weren't actually pregnant - bizarre, but that's why there is a difference.

I'm soooo pleased for you and I'm glad your parents are so happy for you both!

I've got my first scan on the 10th October, the first day of my last period was the 1st August, so it looks like we will be blooming together! :D
