We've been keeping possible names we like-a secret lol.
Our cat is called poppy! I love the name, but ive gone and named the cat it now so can't use it!
Oh go on, I won't tell!
I kept Poppy's name a secret as I didn't want anyone to put me off and I wasn't sure what my family would say. But of course they all said they loved it as soon as she was born
.
My MIL, when shown the top 100 girls names by DH, singled out Poppy and said 'who on earth would call their baby that! Its a pet's name'! but we still used it anyway. Turns out SIL's friend has a dog called Poppy....!

I don't like many boys names so I am keeping schtum
Hubby and I have a general disagreement in principal about names though - I like a 'real' name that can be shortened...he likes the shortened version so just feels the need to name the child that IYSWIM.
Also he likes 'girly' girls names and I keep saying that if any girl we have is anything like it's mother then she ain't going to be 'pink'!! He just can't get his head around the fact that I would have hated to be called anything too frilly!!!
No offence meant to anybody
Thanks for the reminder! All changed and up to date now.
Its so difficult getting DH to agree on any names! And my SIL is with you on the 'real' names as her son has never been called his actual name since birth, only a shortened version.
Well, I guess I have another 19w to ponder!.

LOL I know that feeling. My OH is very into outdoorsy things - hunting, camping, survival stuff (he was in the RAF!) - and he's determined to give any daughter of ours a really nice, pretty, girly name and then dress her in combats and arm her with a swiss army knife from the age of 2! False sense of security, he calls it.. I'm not at all girly either. Not into pink or makeup.0 -
we're having a names nightmare. We just can't agree but to be honest I think we are including too many people. Hubby and I plus the kids, and now it seems his mother is putting her 2p in. The problem is, hubby is french canadian and names which are modern and nice there are really awful and old fashioned here and vice versa. Then if we find a name which we like, the kids hate it... sigh. I'm honestly named out at the moment.:A

Just a note about cloth nappies. My son has just turned 1, we are using the Totsbots Bamboozle birth to potty pack, we used biodegradable disposables until the meconium was finished and then the size 1. We used disposables when away. I do a washing load everyday pretty much, although now I can get away with every other day. However, before solid food the nappies weren't too smelly or nasty, a poo now is a bit more of a labour of love than it used to be!!! On the whole I really like the cloth nappies and know I've saved a fortune. I'm expecting NO. 2 in March and will reuse the nappies so will definitely get my moneys worth.
It was a gamble though as the initial outlay was about £300. Also I am a stay at home mum, so getting the nappies washed is not too much of a bind!!!
Whats difficult with the trail packs is not having enough for a day, (8/9 changes a day to start with) and seeing if the washing everyday is feasible or desirable!!
The new style cloth nappies are great though, they are shaped so not too difficult to put on and I think compared to my antenatal class of 7 others, who all use disposables, we have had less spills and leaks.
So the choice is yours!!

Hmmm - I was quite interested in real nappies too. Would this be an issue to a childminder do you think? Clearly I couldn't expect a minder to wash nappies but would there be an issue in them storing them for me so I can take them home and wash...going off the idea by the minute
There isn't a laundry service near me which is a shame, that would definitely have increased my chances of using them.
Does anyone know the difference in price for biodegradable disposables? Bound to be cost prohibitive methinks
Toto - we are specifically not having the names discussion with DSS (8) I really don't want to give him an option to disagree, it will be hard enough to find something that DH and I both like!
It is far too easy for kids to say 'don't like it'...or they only like names like Britney and Wayne (god I am so out of touch! that was supposed to be spears and rooney btw!).
We will go down the line of 'you're the only person we are going to tell, and you have to keep it a secret but we have chosen to call our daughter Jemima Bunnikins'. Hopefully the pleasure of a secret will please an 8 year old enough to take away the 'don't like it' option!!!please listen to MFD - she is a wise womanProud Mummy to the gorgeous Benjamin John born 14 March 2009, 8lbs 14ozA new little seedling on the way, due 30 September 20120 -
R mac: Allegedly it's better to to dry pail, as in don't bung them in water or anything as the chances of you slopping poopy water everywhere is alarmingly high! They come to no harm dry pailing, they get as clean as well :-)
We're planning on using cloth too, we've got a trial pack (which was made up specially for us so there's slightly more in than usual so it'll give us more idea of practicalities), and looooads of advice, from this website, I highly recommend her, she's a very lovely and very patient lady and we'll see what we like then splash out on more :-)
MFD, Bio disposables are not much more expensive than normal pampers/Huggies, see, Pampers, vs Nature baby :-)Comping, freebieing and trying to pay the mortgage off early!0 -
Re cloth nappies - we used them for awhile with DD. We only got the one sized ones with poppers (already shaped), think they are called Popolini and are supposed to last right up until you potty train. However, for the first few months we found they were too big (she was 7lb 9 at birth) and so used disposables for awhile. I used to dry pail and a few drops of tea tree oil lessens the smell when you lift the lid! Kept the bucket in the downstairs loo as it didn't seem hygenic in the kitchen! If anything got past the liners, someone advised holding them in the loo whilst flushing to get the worst off! TBH I didn't use them that much as went back to work 18.5hrs a week when she was only 17wks old but our childminder was more than happy to use them.
Many local councils try to encourage people to use them - we got £30 discount on ours (Kent county council). Bought 20 in total with 4 wraps and then only had to buy bigger "wraps" (like plastic pants which go on the outside) as she grew (the nappies had lots of poppers to cope with expanding tummy!). I never got on too well at night time - should have used the extra liner which gets held in with poppers too. Also as she got bigger, they did seem quite wet as her bladder got bigger but never really had any probs with nappy rash (only seemed to get this when teething) but used to let her lay bare bum on the changing mat to "air"!!! Also got a bag thing which you lined the nappy bucket with which you put the dirty ones into - this meant you could just pull the bag out and bung in the machine without touching them (more like a netted bag with a zip, like you'd put bras into to stop the wires escaping?!?!)
In the spirit of MS will try and use them again, also hoping to BF for longer this time too to save on formula costs (only managed 16 days last time before getting mastitus (sp??)).
Congrats bloomin freezin, glad things going ok elle gee
As for names, whilst I'm on a mammoth post, my DD is called Rosie and a friend of a friend always says "oh yes how can I forget your daughter, my dogs called Rosie"!! Anyway, I quite like the name Max but am now worried people will think I'm talking about my pet dogs all the time. Am wishing now we'd have been able to find out what we were having (didn't want to know beforehand and he/she wouldn't let us see anyway!). 15 weeks seems a long time to wait now! Also like Lily but would sound like a gardener! My nan was a twin and she was Daisy and sister was Violet. Hope everyone else is well xxProud mum to Matthew born 23/11/08 7lb 13ozand Rosie 12/01/05 7lb 9oz0 -

Anyone wish to share any possible baby boy names with me? Having a tough time choosing!!! I quite like my own name, but I'm hardly ever called it, only a shortened version (unless going to see Dr or MW! :rotfl:) which is one of the reasons I chose Poppy.
x
I have had a tough time picking a boys name, I have quite a few girls names I like.
Dh just out of the blue blurted out a boys name that we have both fallen in love with. The two boys we have are called Luca & Jaden....and I did like Lucia for a girl but have ruled that out now as it is too similar.
Regarding pets names my mum's last dog was called suzie, and her cat is called chloe, so not really pet names, her current dog is called bella. All my pets have real pet like names...Daisy (rabbit) Luigi (cat) Jinx (cat) Jasper (Dog) so i've not used up anything I would call a baby.
For both our boys we picked names that weren't particularly easy to shorten (they could sort of be shortened) and we've stuck with that principle for all the names we have picked out so far.
Good luck finding a name. It is difficult isn't it!
