Gp suggests at least three months before becoming pregnant, but how do you know when it will happen?! lol.... id start taking them as soon as you start ttc.

ps-gp says folic acid is all you need, along with healthy diet and lifestyle.

  • thanks keelykat. Maybe i'll start taking them a couple of months before we start ttc and see how that goes. I know there's never any guarantee but we're both young, fairly fit and healthy - and working on getting fitter / heathier, so we're hoping it won't take a long time.
You're not supposed to take them all through the pregnancy though, are you? So is there something else to take at that point??? I take multivits at the minute cos my iron levels are generally a little low and I can't eat dairy so I need the calcium.
What's the best brand to take???

    Hi cheeky_lil_monkey,

For the first three months starting from 6 weeks I was throwin up every 10 minutes and couldn't hold anything down esp. my vitamins. So started taking Barocca ( an effervecent multivitamin with 400ug Folic acid in) which helps tons as it got the folic acid in (esp. important for the nervous a.k.a. neural tube development) and gave me some water to attempt to keep me hydrated.

As soon as you can take the vitamins and try to take them throughout the pregnanacy :)

    Hope this helps..:D
  • Chicken I'm guessing that 1902 isn't your year of birth!!!

Pregnancy is so harsh on your body, it's crazy! Men just wouldn't do it!! Yet despite knowing there's a tiny chance I could be throwing up every day for 9 months and knowing any energy I have will be given to the baby so I'll feel knackered for 9 months, no sleep etc. I still wanna do it!?!?! What's wrong with us?! Lol.

I thought you had to be careful about taking folic acid after 12 weeks??? I know it's most important during the first 12 weeks. Maybe I'll start taking them 3 months beforehand :)

At the hospital, the consultant told me you dont really need it after 12 weeks but it is up to if you want to carry on for longer. It wont do any harm.

But if you're unsure about any vitamins etc ask your gp for advice, there are some things you shouldnt take too much of. But im no expert!

I know it's still a couple of months away, but wanna make sure we're best prepared when the time comes :)
  • According to the budget from april 2009 child benefit £20 per week for 1st child.
They're also increasing child tax credit by £50 per yr.
  • I've been taking Pregnacare all the way through this pregnancy ( only 2 weeks to go) and my midwife couldnt believe how high my iron levels have stayed she said they have def done some good:p
    19.6.10 Weight loss 6lb :D
  • Oooh maybe that's the one to take. Might help me Iron levels. I sometimes have to take an iron supplement (minadex is the best tasting) which I know I won't be able to take when pregnant. Waiting is doing my nut in!! I wanna get pregnant now!!! But there's just a couple more things we've got to finish to make ourselves a little more stable (I've got uni to finish for a start) and we've got to move house etc. so now just wouldn't be the right time, but that doesn't stop the longing to be a mum!!!
