some info on cmv

What is it?

Cytomegalovirus, or CMV, is a common virus which can infect anyone.
Who gets it?

By the age of. 40 years, 60 - 70% of the population in the UK will have been infected with CMV.
What are the symptoms95% of those infected will have had no symptoms, so they do not know that they have had CMV. The remainder may experience:
Flu-like symptoms ill or an illness resembling glandular fever or hepatitis with Jaundice. CMV may produce a more serious infection in anyone with a lowered immune system:
• premature babies
• those being treated for cancer
• leukaemia sufferers
• transplant patients
• AIDS sufferers
If a woman gets a primary CMV infection while she is pregnant the baby may be born unaffected or affected by one or more of the following:
• hearing loss
• sight problems
• epilepsy
• liver and/or spleen enlargement
• heart defects
• cerebral palsy
• mental retardation
• brain calcification
• These factors can lead to learning and behavioural problems and low IQ, or more severe mental and physical handicaps

How is CMV spread

CMV is excreted in the saliva, urine faeces, semen and cervical secretions of infected people. Any of these secretions can transmit CMV. So you can catch CMV by:
• kissing on the mouth
• intimate bodily contact
• sexual intercourse
• blood transfusions
• organ transplants
A child may contract CMV from an infected mother before birth, during birth and through breast feeding.
Remember the vast majority of CMV infections are harmless, but if you are pregnant and have not had CMV, you are at risk.

• Hello all

Just a little moan really, nothing serious...but DH and I have been pretty convinced we are having a little girl (although we could be wrong - will hopefully find out at the scan in 3 wks time) and after him pouring scorn on any name I came up with, I found one that I thought about for a few days and really, really liked. I didn't even want to tell him because I liked it so much and although I thought he might like it I couldn't be sure. Anyway, I suggested it to him and he really likes it too - he even said well done! Stupidly though, as it's not one of the most popular names around at the moment (although it's in the top 100) I began searching baby name forums and for the most part didn't see anyone discussing it (a good thing because we didn't want anything too popular this time) but then found a thread where it was pretty much slagged off. It's rained on my parade a bit as i still really like it and can't see the reasoning behind it. What do you think? Would this affect your choice? I'm probably just being silly as some of the names being discussed on there I personally don't like but I would keep it to myself if that was the case. Sorry, don't really want to divulge what the name is just yet, just a bit of a rant i suppose............
• Its your opinion that matters not everyone else!

Thanks, I know you're right....these people aren't the 'experts' on children's names any more than I am!
• I have posted on here many times and often i am on a downer and worrying about something - but yay me - i just passed my driving test at 36 weeks pregnant. Had to tell everyone as i am still shaking and in shock.

On a negative note my daughter has tonsilitis - anybody know how long i should keep her off school - she has some medicine from the drs.

• Yay! Well done you! I found driving a lot more difficult while pregnant so all credit to you!

As for the other thing, I don't know for definite but our school policy says that if a child is poorly enough to need medicine (except for inhalers and ritalin and stuff that has to be taken all the time) then they are too poorly for school. Our head very much frowns upon children being sent to school with antibiotics etc. Having said that all schools are different so don't take that as a fact.
