lwcus78 - just to let you know I had 3 phantom pregnancies over a 6 months before I fell pregnant. I was absolutely certain each time that I was pregnant as I had all the symptoms of nausea, not being able to eat certain foods, sore breasts, and smells really getting to me but each time I wasn't pregnant.

I also went to the Dr each time as I really pride myself on knowing my body and my intuition which told me I was definitely pregnant. Each time they did a wee test, which were all -ve and I had a couple of blood tests done too that also came back -ve. I was soooo certain that I was pregnant but the Dr told me this (she was a very good Dr too): if I had been pregnant and then started bleeding making me think that I had a miscarriage then the pregnancy would have still shown up on the blood tests as they are very accurate.

She also said that sometimes when you have your period your body doesn't secrete an egg when you are at the time of ovulation so then the necessary hormone, which stimulates a normal period, doesn't get secreted either. I can't remember the name of the correct hormone but if it isn't secreted then the uterine lining grows more and you get the symptoms of being pregnant! Also when you get your next period it is heavier than normal too. So with that in mind, you didn't make it up - it actually happened. It was just that you were thinking it was something else.

I think these phantom pregnancies happened to me to get my body and mind ready for pregnancy. Going through all these things was an emotional roller-coaster but helped me to be more calm about getting and being pregnant. I am now 34 weeks pregnant and expecting my first baby girl around the 20th of Feb. So it always does work out in the end.

So don't worry - all will be well. Just try to keep your wits about you and don't let your brain rush off with things until you're more certain. On another note when I did get pregnant I just happened to do the test and it was positive - I didn't have any symptoms at all!

    Good luck to you. xxx

  • Just to say, I had two miscarriages last year (actually 2006 - forgot it's a new year!) and pregnancy tests still showed up as positive afterwards presumably because the hormone is still in the system even though the baby has gone.

I think most tests are fairly accurate these days (although you do occasionally hear of them being wrong).

Hope that you have more luck next month, lwcus, and that we see you on the pregnancy list soon.

i went to see the consultant yesterday for my pregnancy and i was told i might have to have a c section as i had some problems last year and had to have some of my cervix cut away(large loop exerstion) and so my cervix might not open to have a natural delivery,i am very nervous about this s they wont know until i am in labour weather i need t have one or not.and i feel this could be dangerous to my baby,i know people have c sections every day,but if they know that i might not be able to deiver shouldnt there be a option where i can book into a having a c section,it could be a difficult one as i had preeclampsia with 2 other pregnancies both induced 4 weeks early. so i am worried about it all.

    anybody been through this?
appreciate what you have got x

    Hi Ella Ella Ella,

I hope your Grandad is on the mend. Keep your midwife fully informed of how you feel/any effects and they will keep a close eye on you and bubs. My lot have been great during mine (we suffered a bereavement amongst other things) and they have been very supportive. Try and get a bit of 'me' time -you are important too.

Thanks Bun, he is getting much better thanks. I wont go into the ins and outs but i have just got home after his Step Son and Step Daughter and both their partners (who do nothing for him and never visit) rolled up at the hospital this afternoon demanding a family meeting about putting him into care. My mam (his real daughter, carer and next of kin) is very upset as they were shouting, putting her down and taking about his will.

I do lots for my Granda and am very very stressed out after they basically told me my help was not needed and i have been pushing them out as i drive him to all his appointments!!!. I tried to keep my cool and talk reasonably with them for the sake of the baby but a few swear words did leave my mouth.

Im now having constant Braxton Hicks so the plan is a pizza, bath and bed and try to forget about it.

Your completley right about me time and i know im doing way to much as even before all of this i could feel myself getting more and more anxious, down and depressed. I have suffered from depression for nine years but have managed without medication for a few years as i feel thats what works best for me but the baby is my main concern now and if i need to take it after the birth then i will for her sake.

I hope everybody else is doing ok x

  • Hey Yorkshirechick. I hope this is it for you!!!
I'm not speaking from my own experience here, never having been pregnant but I'll give ya my 2cents (please anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong).

I think labour and the signs of labour are different for everyone and every baby. No show / waters breaking is fairly common, these can happen later in labour. The contractions on and off could be bh or they could be the real thing, I think the only way to tell is to wait it out. If it's bugging you, maybe take a little trip to the hospital, they'll more than likely send you away again, but if it would give you peace of mind at this point in time, then I don't think there's anything wrong with it. I know that, especially with a first baby (not sure if this is your first but no others are mentioned in your signature) that these can be real contractions, but that they can go on for hours / days / weeks like this. 2 friends who have given birth recently were like that - one for about 28 hours but once labour got going properly, the bubs was out so fast, the other for 11 days ending in a c-section cos bubs got stressed, I don't think it's possible to tell. But with your due date being so near, it could be the real thing.

I'm sure it's the last thing you feel like doing, but keep active, go for walks, eat spicey food (all the usual), go for more walks....they're meant to be brilliant. Only time will tell for you but keep us updated!! Bubs will come when he wants to and I'm sure you wouldn't have it any other way. Good luck and I hope things really start moving for you and go really well and that you're back here soon telling us all about the little one (with photos might I add!).

Just to let you all know - it was definitely the real thing!!

  • Forgot to say, my Grandad did hear some of this and i told him brielfy that they were unhappy with us and he said he wanted Stepson to stay away from him and that Step daughter wasnt the boss of him. He is 90 years old but very lucid and independant, he even has a little scooter which he goes down the shops and park on!
