Hi,
I thought that since I've been been posting advice about dealing with c-section I would put it all in one post.
This is based on my experience of an emergency c-section in April.
In Hospital:
Skin to skin contact - Ask if not offered I didn't and regret it
Patient handles - makes getting in and out of bed easier
Pain Killers - accept all offers
Visitors - try to limit use the time in hospital to rest as much as possible
At Home:
Never refuse offers of help - my mum almost moved in!
Get DH/OH to cook if possible
Take Arnica
Expose the scar to the air as much as possible
Get DH to get up in the night to assist with feeds (picking baby up etc)
Get DH to do the middle of the night nappy changes
You will be numb after the op from your navel down to the pubic bone and will remain so, my feeling is only just beginning to return after 6.5 months.
In hospital post op they gave me 3 litres of saline, so I swelled up like a balloon after about 2 days.

*sigh*lol maybe you are getting your "energy burst" and are soon to go into labour CG! Mind you saying that if it were true for everyone I'd have gone into labour two weeks ago. Mine was 2am washing up!
My acid reflux has actually woken me up choking in recent nights - I didn't know that was even possible!!
Still only a few more days for me and max 7 for you .....
Off to brew some more raspberry leaf tea and buy a hot curry !
Still hoping for "natural labour" to kick in ......scared stiff of all the other options (note to self I should not read pregnancy mags/books/forums any more OR listen to friends renditions of theirs, their mums and their mums best friends birth stories...too many scare stories!!!).
Still DS has an assembly at school today so at least I'll get to go to that ..it's the first time he's had to say more than two words ...they've finally recognised his talent!!!!:D If I do have a CS (which is looking increasingly likely) will be at least a month till I can drive again so gotta make the most of my freedom now!
Enjoy the day everyone - at least the weather is good - was almost warm yesterday!
btw only had one lot of trick or treaters yesterday - now who is going to eat that big tub of sweeties I got from tesco!!!!MSE PARENT CLUB MEMBER.ds1 nov 1997ds2 nov 2007:jFirst DDFirst DD born in june:beer:.0 -

MDW
Just thought I'd add my two penneth as I had emergency CS for DD1 and elective for DD2. The thought of having to have a CS absolutely terrified me during my first preg as I'm extremely squeamish about injections, incisions, blood etc etc but I found it all much less hideous than I'd expected.
My experience honestly wasn't too bad. Obviously you are sore afterwards and everyone is different in their recovery. Perhaps I was really unusual, but I healed really quickly, I was able to lift my baby without too much difficulty as soon as I was back up on my feet after the anaesthetic had worn off.
I do wonder if that was key, as my hospital try to get you up out of bed within a few hours - ie, I had my DD2 at 6pm, and they had me up out of bed and showering by myself at around 10am the next morning. I made a real effort to walk around and get as mobile as possible, yes it was painful, but I'm sure it helped. The woman in the bed next to me who had an elective too, refused to get out of bed for about 48 hours without wheelchair assistance and she could still hardly move when I went home on day 3.
Also, both times I was back driving again within 2 weeks. I spoke to my insurance companies both times and neither had any problem with it as long as my doctor or midwife considered me safe and able to perform an emergency stop without problem.
I took arnica with DD2 but not DD1, didn't notice any real difference in my recovery times, but I'd recommend it as it can't hurt to try it. I would also echo MDW and say take all the painkillers they give you and if you are still feeling very uncomfortable ask them if there is anything else you can have. Also, don't stop taking the painkillers too soon. You might feel like you are recovering, but if you let the painkillers wear off, you will realise that you haven't recovered yet!!
The only real downside I can think of is that breast feeding is very difficult after CS as it is so awkward to manouvre the baby into a good feeding position. I gave up both times but I also think it was something to do with my errr... equipment, as neither of them could latch on well, kept getting right on the tip and giving me blood blisters in places you really don't want them!! :rotfl:
Also, and this is one of my real bugbears about everyone dinning into you that breast is best, if you can't do it, DON'T BEAT YOURSELF UP. It really doesn't matter that much, your baby will still be absolutely fine, you won't have let them down etc etc etc. I remember feeling sooooo upset about giving up when I had DD1 (of course the hormones have a lot to do with you feeling so guilty) and now I can look back on it and chuckle to myself. I just need to take a look at my 2 daughters to see that bottle feeding certainly didn't do them any harm whatsoever!0 -
HI everybody! Sorry not been around much but am getting all my stuff done for when I finish my job next Friday.
Hi to newbies
Congrats on a lovely name Fac - Elliot is great, and my brother (baby due in 2 weeks) asked last night what I thought about it so great minds think alike. In three years I've only known two, so still nice and unusual, but not too unusual.
Attention CG - if you haven't sorted it already, have an answer on the raincover front. Went into Just Kidding (www.babies247.com) where I live, and they have an assortment of general covers from between 9.99 and 14.99m which is nearly half price the official branded ones. It's a Baby Gogo on that I've got. I can't find it on the site, but maybe will pop up somewhere else.
Hopefully back later!Annabeth Charlotte arrived on 7th February 2008, 2.5 weeks early0
