ps i know this sounds really daft but i dont even know what to expect when labour starts will it be like period pain that gets worse and more intense? i get so many aches and pains that i dont know what they are really!
i get shooting pains when i walk very low down - like the kind you would get if you had a water infection after weeing if you know what i mean, and i keep presuming thats baby being engaged but maybe not?:o

i also get stitch like aches on and off down front and side of bump:confused:
but nothing that hurts as much as i am expecting!

(this may be tmi and not meant to worry anyone at all) but i had a MC last year and i had what the nurse said was first stage labour that was like really really intense period pain that came and went in waves but was very very painful. in between was nothing. is that what i should expect?

i have two friends who recently gave birth but their waters were the first thing to go. (which i am constantly paranoid about and checking myself!:o )
every time i say "arrghh" at any pain hubby goes "do you need to go to hospital? ru okay? what pain have you got?" :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: its exhausting!!

That sounds about right Emma. That is all I can remember from last time, almost four years ago. Mine started off really mild and got increasingly more painful. I haven't got my labour refresher course until next weds (38+6  ) so will hopefully get more info then, especially about all the drugs I can have lol.

    Hi Gals.
Here we go, lots of questions. Once you start typing you think of something else, lol!:rotfl:
I was wondering at what time did you start getting stuff in for the new arrival?
I'm just going into my eighth week so I know it's a bit soon yet but I keep seeing great stuff on freecycle.

What about spotting? I don't want to give TMI but I've had "discharge" for about a week. I did ask my midwife and she said it's probably just that. It seems to fade and then come back. It's not "bloody" though. (I'm really sorry about this but I wanted to ask someone who'd probably been there, done that!)

Hi redflame and congrats on your pregnancy! Re buying stuff, I felt I left it too late....started about 25 + weeks, and just finished last week at 38 weeks. I think leaving it that late made it more of a chore than something nice to do!!!!!

Re discharge, i had all sorts too! Most weeks from 6-13. If you are worried keep asking mw or I found the practise nurse was really helpful too. That's what they are there for.

  • Hi emma and Rachel, is it nice to know were still here or not lol!!!

Emma I have decided after reading your post that the champagne can now stay in the fridge until baby decides to make an appearance. The last thing I could do with right now is feeling sick etc. Just been a MIL's house and she was surprised how low my bump is now, I inspect it every night in the mirror and see no change myself so she gave me some hope, also the jeans that I could fasten two days ago are now on with the button open and a big belt hiding it lol so baby has definitely dropped.

Emma you will definitely know when labour has started, its like waves of period pain starting in your back and your whole bump tenses, I thought that each time I got a contraction with the other three that my bump seemed to go higher.

I am now having a major panic as I thought I had everything I needed for baby but have just realised I don't have a changing mat?? How could I forget something like that. Pregnancy has definitely dulled my brain cells.

Anyway may be tmi but off to phone the midwife as I fell like I'm leaking every time I walk now, don't know if its my waters or just baby pressing on my bladder.

    Isn't pregnancy dignified:rotfl: :rotfl:
They took my signature away!!!!
  • Emma with regard to pain relief I had diamorphine with my other three and its bl!!dy good, its like your on another planet. Great stuff!!

i have no idea what pain relief i will use, or want, or need! am just going to see what happens and how i cope. hopefully i will get the water birth i want and use some gas and air, but the reality might be somewhat different!

let us know what the midwife says, when i had my leak last week she said put a pad in and if its wet after one hour its your waters ?
  • Thanks for your reply Rachel, it's great to be able to speak to people in the same club (no pun intended!)

  • Oh Emma, I'm so sorry the champagne didn't work for you.

As for the DC, it's brown in colour. It's not offensive in smell (sorry, TMI) and I haven't any pains. Got an appointment with mw on wednesday so I'll mention it to her again then. When I spoke to her in the week she did say they may take a swab if it get worse.

I'm not going to worry myself too much about it, but it is only natural to be concerned and as I've never been here before I don't know what's normal and what ain't.

Re: maternity pads and breast pads. I went through a whole pack of brick-size mat pads within a few hours of giving birth, then graduated on to night-size Bodyform (blue packs, they're great and very absorbent), and now am on even smaller Bodyform. I think this time I'm getting less bleeding though - am not sure why, but it's definitely considerably less now just after 5 days. I think it varies quite a lot woman to woman anyway, and obviously one birth to another as well.

You probably won't need many breast pads for the first couple of days until the milk comes in. Again, this varies a lot for different people.

CG: like you, I leaked a lot with DS1, but am finding am leaking a lot less this time round! So it is possible to change. :D Also, the whole breastfeeding feels a bit different this time (the let-down is a lot less strong - it's weird how things can be different ).

I'm a firm believer in Lansinoh pads (expensive but worth it if you're a leaker who wants to avoid the Miss Wet T-shirt - look :D) and also Tommee Tippee ones - which incidentally are 1/2 price in Tesco at the moment, so stock up! :money:

Also, continuing the MSE theme, the two Bounty packs you get at the hospital are great. I had a full-size bottle of Comfort and a full-size pack of Johnson's wipes in mine, a tub for Pampers wipes, as well as loads of other smaller samples and vouchers. Something else, apart from the lovely baby, to look forward to after all that pain. :j :rotfl:
