realised I never updated our status on the list....

Congrats to all those who've popped since :D

I love my little one but it's certainly a shock to the system... we're getting a bit more used to it though. The weirdest thing is that this is for ever - we don't have the option to give him back after a few weeks if it's not working out... (IYSWIM)/

Still it's great to be able to eat pate and stuff again :D and once I'm off the painkillers I'll be able to have some alcohol too

Emma please tell me your still here and the champagne didn't work last night lol!!! Anyway, after a really busy day yesterday I was putting away ironing and I had on HUGE contraction - it certainly wasn't a Braxton Hicks, I didn't know whether to stand up lie down or what - and then nothing  . Anyway, lazy day here today no school run, so off for a shower and might just paint my nails.

Just wanted to add that my right foot looks like the elephant mans (so bloody swollen) which I think was all the walking yesterday, I can barely get a flip flop on it at the minute lol.
They took my signature away!!!!
  • Hi Gals.
Here we go, lots of questions. Once you start typing you think of something else, lol!:rotfl:
I was wondering at what time did you start getting stuff in for the new arrival?
I'm just going into my eighth week so I know it's a bit soon yet but I keep seeing great stuff on freecycle.

What about spotting? I don't want to give TMI but I've had "discharge" for about a week. I did ask my midwife and she said it's probably just that. It seems to fade and then come back. It's not "bloody" though. (I'm really sorry about this but I wanted to ask someone who'd probably been there, done that!)

and finally on a lighter note. So here I was this morning watching friends. The one where Pheobe has her brother's triplets and I was in floods. I'm an emotional person anyway but that's just ridiculous! :rotfl:

Hiya... :D Am finally getting a chance to post this, after a 2-day feeding fest that Alex decided to have...

    Here goes.

I had contractions on and off all day Sunday (I even posted here at the time as they kept stopping and starting). At 2am Monday morning they got a lot more regular (about 5 mins apart) and quite painful. I'd been up for 24 hours at that stage so was knackered anyway... Struggled through until 5.30am and then decided it was time to phone the labour ward.

I was 4cm dilated at this stage, and after all the paperwork and faffing about, was offered the chance to use the pool. I'd vaguely considered pool labour/birth before, but hadn't made up my mind about it (I'd learnt the lesson of being flexible with my plans when I had DS1, as I ended up being induced then). Anyway, as the opportunity was there, I decided to go for it, thinking I could always get out of the pool if I didn't like it. I did though, as it turned out, and stayed there for the whole labour and birth. :T

The water felt soothing and nice. I was having lots of back ache for some reason, and really felt the water helped with that. I got gas & air pretty much straight away, and hung on to it for dear life (love the stuff :D). I went into the pool at about 7am and Alex was born just before 2pm. :j

The first few hours in the pool felt great - I was really relaxed and chilled out. Once I got nearer the pushing stage, though, I can't say I was very chilled out - it was hard work, but I'm convinced being in the pool made things a bit easier.

As this was my second birth, I have to admit I expected it to be a bit shorter, but hey ho. I'm not going to lie - it's hard work whatever way you look at it. I am such a wuss though, and also screamed the place down. :o Am I embarrassed - no!

I had one smallish tear and some grazes, which they asked me if I wanted them stitched or not. Being given the choice, I said no, and am glad I did - I just wanted them to leave me alone at that stage! They seem to be healing fine though.

All in all, it went fine. I was glad to get a much more natural labour this time compared to DS1, and I had a really lovely midwife. :happyhear

To those considering a pool birth, I’d say definitely give it a go – you can always get out if you don’t like it. The only slight drawback I can think of is, if you’ve given birth in the pool, you don’t get given the injection to speed up the placenta getting out, so it might be quite a wait. Once I’d given birth, we stayed in the pool for probably about half an hour, which wasn’t the most pleasant experience, sitting around in lukewarm water with all sorts of things floating around you! :rotfl: I then asked to get out (the placenta still wouldn’t budge), and after a lot more faffing about, it finally came out after an hour or so (they had to give me the jab after all).

And that’s about it. Am adjusting to life with a newborn, again, which is so tiring but also the loveliest thing ever. If anyone wants to know anything else about pool births, you’re welcome to PM me (can’t guarantee a speedy response at the moment though! :o). Good luck to you all; I’ll be keeping an eye on this thread and I’ll see you all on the Parents thread soon! Take care, girlies. :kisses3:

Re: maternity pads and breast pads. I went through a whole pack of brick-size mat pads within a few hours of giving birth, then graduated on to night-size Bodyform (blue packs, they're great and very absorbent), and now am on even smaller Bodyform. I think this time I'm getting less bleeding though - am not sure why, but it's definitely considerably less now just after 5 days. I think it varies quite a lot woman to woman anyway, and obviously one birth to another as well.

You probably won't need many breast pads for the first couple of days until the milk comes in. Again, this varies a lot for different people.

CG: like you, I leaked a lot with DS1, but am finding am leaking a lot less this time round! So it is possible to change. :D Also, the whole breastfeeding feels a bit different this time (the let-down is a lot less strong - it's weird how things can be different ).

I'm a firm believer in Lansinoh pads (expensive but worth it if you're a leaker who wants to avoid the Miss Wet T-shirt - look :D) and also Tommee Tippee ones - which incidentally are 1/2 price in Tesco at the moment, so stock up! :money:

Also, continuing the MSE theme, the two Bounty packs you get at the hospital are great. I had a full-size bottle of Comfort and a full-size pack of Johnson's wipes in mine, a tub for Pampers wipes, as well as loads of other smaller samples and vouchers. Something else, apart from the lovely baby, to look forward to after all that pain. :j :rotfl:

Sounds like it might not be long Sarah! Fingers crossed for you. I was up at quarter to five this morning with cramps/false contractions again. Really quite painful but not as bad as the real thing obviously. Lasted a couple of hours again and nothing since!! Went to get bp checked and it is still high so back at hosp tomorrow.....Hope all well with you Emma!

    hi!:j
no the champers didnt start me off - i was sooooooo ill though :o
after having about 2cm of champagne (from a flute so hardly any really i was racing up to the loo belly gurgling. was there a while (sorry if tmi) after another small sip i started feeling very nauseous, another waddle upstairs and was wretching for ages. ended up sat with a bowl next to me on sofa! wasnt sick though just gipping and feeling very sick. in the name of science;) i finished off the glass and can honestly say i have nevr felt so bad after one glass of anything before in my life. i was sweating like mad and just feeling really awful. not drunk awful, poorly awful!
so went to bed, where i had stomach cramps on and off all night and kept thinking if i go into labour i hope i dont smell of alcohol! :o but nothing i am still here fat as ever!
today we have been on a 2 hour walk to try and get things moving but no progress yet - i know i have 2 weeks to go but in this weather you just want the baby out dont ya! as i put it to hubby, i have loved being pregnant its only now im beginning to get fed up so id rather have her now and finish on a high :rotfl: beofre i get completely fed up!

maybe if you were overdue the sickness and toiletting from the champers might start you off i dont know but for me i wont be doing it again. i havent drank through pregnancy maybe thats why had such a bad effect i dont know but wasnt what i was expecting!

so all three of us are still waiting then, sarah you sound like you might "pop" first :T

Dormouse, thankyou for the info on water births, at parentcraft they said if you want the placenta injection you have to get out the pool - i will ask them that theough if get the water birth i want.
Cant wait for the freebie packs :D
i have bought three packs of kotex huuuge pads that say maternity/night time. shoudl i buy more? or see how i get on with those? have just put one pack in hospital bag.

redflame705, i didnt start buying anything till well after my 20 week scan as then i felt reassured that all was well with the pregnancy. you do see things on freecycle but they do tend to come up time and again - theres always someone with baby stuff!
not sure what you mean about the DC, what colour is it? i had spotting early on and was very worrying, especially after having a miscarriage last year, but all has turned out fine for me.
    congratulations on your pregnancy :T
