Reporting to insurance is a terms and conditions issue. Reporting to police is a legal requirement. The insurance company may or may not report it to police, but if cyclist has reported to police and doesn't know your registration then it would reach them in time

Really? Then how does a driver accused of such an offence get to court then? Dosn't he/she have to be reported or charged first?

    Yes really.

You tell us as you appear to be the resident expert. What would a newbie know?

    Let's not.

    It's garbage.

You don't get arrested for a "traffic offence", or if some jobsworth makes a "complaint"!

Ok, we are being pedantic now.

I was traveling in a coach under police escort (convoy from a football match) a few years ago as a second driver. A police motorcyclist had stopped in front of us at a roundabout. We rear ended the motorcyclist at slow speed thus the rider was not injured.

Driver was detained by the police and charged with careless driving. What ever you want to call it, he was charged and convicted for the offence.

Careless driving was never an arrestable offence so any arrest would not be lawful.

Everything now has to pass the necessity test

    Back to you.

Careless driving isn't, it's a motoring violation and can get you fined and penalty points. But when careless driving leads to an accident such as above then it's criminal matter - because you physically harmed someone else.

In a hit and run, the whole local squad will come after you and probably tackle you to the ground and end up with 4 bobbies sitting on you while one breaks you shoulder trying to cuff you.

Hardly relevant to you telling us (and blaspheming at a newbie in your authoritative/bullying manner) that we get arrested if at fault in a road accident.

    It's still a summary offence.

So he wasn't arrested and would have been summoned not charged.

It looks like you are making things up.

He shouldn't talk nonsense then. At the end of the day, you can get reported/arrested/charged/detained (however you want to paint it) for careless driving following a minor bump. So your info is also questionable.

Anyway, in the OPs case his wife didn't. So clearly the police decided she wasn't at fault.

But yes, he needs to inform his insurers but will need the details of the other party (cyclist).

    Question answered. Game over. :easter:

Well....you keep (wrongly) telling us we get "arrested" if we are at fault in a rta.

Conversley, you now tell us we are not at fault if involved in a rta but escape from being "reported/arrested/charged/detained".

Which is more garbage from you.
