I read in the Observer last weekend that this fund is attracting as much money as the Tsunami did.

No - It's currently £184,000 and £50,000 of that is from Portsmouth FC. Remember this isn't a Charity and dosen't have a charity status, so can't claim back VAT or have 'Gift Aid' reclaimed on monies received.

I suspect that the tone of this thread would have been completely different if Madeleine had disappeared whilst the parents were enjoying a meal on the veranda or in the kitchen of their apartment or sleeping whilst their children slept in an adjacent room.

I agree the tone would be totally different if the above applied. If the above applied I would consider they had taken reasonable steps to look after their children. They would be hearing distance if the children cried or called out to them. In turn it is likely the children would be able to hear them talking etc, and be reassured by this.

The point about it for me is just that two well educated, intelligent people thought it ok to leave their three children alone , alone in strange surroundings. I just cannot get my head around how they could ever think it was acceptable behaviour.

Yes I agree, this is entirely different.
We'll never know but I think it's much less likely that someone would abduct a child with adults nearby.

If a parent gave a child a gobstopper to eat and then the child started choking...would you A...start hurling abuse at the parent for giving it to the child or...B. try and do what you can to help...?

Basically now is not the time for critisism

well yea your gonna make sure the kid is ok first then have a go at the parents.

ok 2nd worse case scenario and maddy is never found, does that mean the parents are effectively `let off`?

for christs sake, why compare that to leaving 3 under 4's alone?

OK, for arguments sake, what would you like to see happen to them?

Ah - big difference then! It was in a comment piece in the Observer and implied that people were being as generous in donating to this fund as they were donating to the Tsunami appeal. I'd imagine it's more in the Diana Memorial Fund league - people giving money to show they care but not having a clue what the money is for.
I have to say, I haven't dug my hand in my pocket for this as I can't really see the point. The family are shutting the door after the horse has bolted, to coin a phrase.

i would like to see them treated the way a `normal` person in this country would be treated, and that means social services getting involved and the possibility of the other 2 kids getting put into care.

just because there doctors ther appear to be above the law and it sucks.

its a fact that if this happened down my road the social services would have been knocking the door down long before now.

    so to sum up,,

i want them to be treated the same as any other `joe` who neglets there kids.
