The day after yes,but had some major influence over the Hillsborough report.

Which report is it that you have in mind? There have been several. The Taylor Enquiry one, perhaps?
...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.

The Unions weren't selfish in their attitude and demands?

Some were some were not. Unions are their members and in some cases their demands were unrealistic. The problem in those days was that cliques in the leadership were able to manipulate the membership. The need to ballot membership was long over due.
Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.

The old feeling of social solidarity, present ever since 1945, simply dissipated into nothingness. The age of 'us and them' had begun.

What feeling of "togetherness" was there in going cap-in-hand to the IMF in the 1970s? The 3 day week, the constant strikes, the Winter of Discontent?

IF that was social solidarity, you can keep it.

I wish people would stop praising her for having courage of her conviction.

A good politician listens to arguments and experts on matters which they have little knowledge.

Then decides on the best policies after a period of reflection.

Thatcher just attacked problems like a cow in a china shop - making her mind up quickly and then refusing to back down even when she was proved to be wrong.

@grahamdevon et al Thatcher and the tories under Cameron are not respecting people so why should she have even a shred of respect.
I don't see why I should be sensitive to the fragilities of sensitive tory voters when they have been responsible for letting Cameron and his ilk tear down our social safety net aided and abetted by their right wing media pals.
Tory neoliberalism under cameron and thatcher is a get rich scheme for the elites and the ordinairy man suffers. so no sympathy.

The only people being disrespected by the Coalition - the Coalition remember - are those who are disrespecting the taxpayers. Those who deserve their benefits will retain them, the scroungers will be weeded out. People on benefits appear (by the hysteria around the "bedroom tax") to be the most selfish people around: they rely on people who work, often in disheartening jobs, they give little or nothing back to society, and they won't even share their taxpayer-subsidised houses to accommodate other people, or to move elsewhere to allow families to live in a proper, decent way together in uncrowded circumstances.

The social safety net is full of holes and needs repair. We need (and have) a society which looks after the poor, the young, the old, the frail and the sick. What a mistake, though, that the DWP benefits checklist, which gave excellent information to people, used to be called "entitled to".

We will see, won't we, in 2015 which of today's policies will be reversed. I don't think they will be reversing many - and in fact, it appears that Labour will be making things more difficult: I refer to the Labour idea of making benefits contribution-based.

Regarding the rich "elite" (although it's not my opinion that they are "elite"); these are the people who employ other people.

I have never been employed by anyone poorer than myself.

These are the people who have paid me for my work so that I could buy my own lovely little house; have a small pension (I am about £20 a week above the "Pensioner Poverty level" of £200 per week), and live a good, decent, and still taxpaying life.

The latest figures for those claiming benefits 'illegally' is here:

    http://statistics.dwp.gov.uk/asd/asd2/index.php?page=fraud_error

For 2011/12 it shows that "0.7%...of total benefit expenditure is overpaid due to fraud" (0.5% of DLA)

I don't think you'd get much veg picked on those numbers....?
