So actually in your opinion ex-council tenants (who you seem to have a dim view of) don't really have much to thank her for?
Certainly people today who might need social housing, but oh, there isn't any, have bog all to thank her for.

It's likely that those council flats now house more people now than they otherwise would.

In any event I believe she wasn't in power 1997-2010.

    From the Interweb somewhere:

Now Lady Thatcher has died, John Major is our greatest living politician.

Sadly, Major is now our greatest living Prime Minister.

Although I think there are still a few better living politicians.

As for MT, she was a fantastic leader. Lefties need to get over it. Excuses like 'Tony was a thatcherite' are utter nonsense, YOU voted him in power, New Labour was a complete failure and had 12 years to put the supposed "wrongs" right. Except there werent any wrongs, the left completely screwed it up AGAIN and left us with a deficit from hell and a lot of fatter, lazy scum to support.

Were you an adult when Thatcher became PM?

The fall of the generals that resulted from the war probably save more lives although that is irrelevant to the justice of the war itself.
However they were Argentinians so maybe they don't count in your book.

To be fair 2/3 of those he has counted in the 1000 were also Argentine so yes they do count.

You have to be of a certain age to remain the black days of Union power. The endless stoppages. Picket lines. Trains and buses that simply didn't turn up. The control of a few over so many.

Thatcher tapped in a real resentment at the time of the majority of hard working folk. Irrespective of political persuasion. Who wanted to make something of their lives.

I think I'm missing something here.

All this prove (again) is that the left leaning papers are out to incite hatred against someone who's just died.

    .

I cannot defend some of the more extreme reactions to Thatcher (Galloway etc) but I can appreciate that her attitude as PM was very divisive.

The problem is that those that idolise her want to use her death to celebrate her "greatness", even to the extent of trying to re-writing history about what she did and also making party political points. At the same time they do not like the people who do not sign up to this hagiography, even to the point of questioning their right to say anything negative about her.

I can agree that some of the things she did were positive. But the biggest thing she did in my view was to bring about a cultural change to a selfish lifestyle.

The control of a few over many - sounds like today, not the 1970s. Look at the bankers!

The Unions weren't selfish in their attitude and demands?

I was wondering if Paul really remembered Thatcher (who he called a fantastic leader) or was simply going by what he has read.

You are right you have to be of a certain age to remember what happened in those days and different things affected people differently. My vivid recollection was the damage her policies did to the NHS in that era. I agree that she did tap into the resentment of individuals and very successfully.
