Before 1982 nobody gave a flying **** about the Falklands - certainly not Thatcher and her acolytes. Then, all of a sudden, Thatcher was presented with an opportunity to become Elizabeth I - and she took it. It was a gift from Heaven to her. If the Argies had bothered to station 10,000 professional soldiers instead of clueless conscripts on the islands, and backed them up with their entire air force, we would have been screwed and Thatcher turfed out of office.

    Absolutely correct.

Thatcher was the most unpopular leader in the history of Great Britain until the Falklands War.

It was all about gaining popularity and winning elections.

Alternatively, if you are in a position where you are responsible for protecting the people & land under your jurisdiction you might feel obliged to actually protect them.
The Falkland Islands were, & are, as entitled to the protection of the Government as anywhere in the UK - including where you live or, should some mad Junta decide to invade & take over your town should we all just say "Shame, but not worth losing lives over. Let them keep it"?

If this is your opinion please explain why we only showed any interest in defending them after the occupation.
Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.
  • I am very sad that she died today 4/8/2013.
    It should have been 4/8/1978.

You are getting more desperate by the comment.

Thatchers' war never helped the disappeared. They had already disappeared. More would have disappeared no doubt. Vietnam war-City of Hue Tet offensive 1968 "we had to destroy the city to save it"-american colonel.

To suggest I support the generals really doesn't fit the tone of my comments.

the generals fell directly as a result of their defeat

Please expand on what you are trying to say.

I am trying to say that you are not the first person to accuse him of making a strawman today.

I don't have much time for Churchill either - a hugely overestimated PM. He lost Britain her empire as the price for American intervention, and continued burning civilians with area bombing even when the war was practically over.

And he didn't unite the nation for long - Labour won a landslide in 1945.

how many British troops and civilians in the UK died during the period that 'the war was practically over'?
