NOTE : The simple act as nannytone states of "getting out of their car" infrequently mentioned on these boards but is critical to independence.
all disabilities are 'equal' but each has its individual difficulties.
i rarely feel the need to take up a disabled bay and prefer to use thise for people that need them.
in return, i would like to think that people with physical disabilities would also make concessions regarding the difficulties that i have, such as not dashing about in their motorised wheelchairs and 'assuming' that i can see them and move out of their way.
but as i said before... i dont have the outward signs of being blind, so cant really expect anyone to notice.
i have been shouted at a few times by people in scooters/wheelchairs because i gave walked into them.
i dont use the above response of them being stupid...
i justy say 'im sorry but i'm blind.. and yourre ignorant'.
it has nothing to do with disability... people just need to be more respectful and tolerant in general0 -
I parked in a supermarket car park a couple of years ago. As I got out of the car to walk in, an old man said something about me not being disabled. I thought he was just joking and said that I was glad that I wasn't disabled.
He then came right up to my face and had a real go at me about how digusting it was parking in a disabled spot when you're not. It went on for a few minutes so I just stood there and took it. At the end he said "have you got anything to say for yourself". I then pointed out that the space I parked it was next to all the disabled spaces but wasn't actually a disabled space.
We both had a good laugh over it, and now always say hello when we see each other in the supermarket - he still apologies everytime to this day.0 -
i dont make snide comments unless i am shouted at!
in the supermarket once, i walked in front of a wheelchair user in the greengrocery department and the user shouted ' watch where youre going you bloody idiot'
so i think my response was fairly balanced.
he amazed me though when he continued with his verbal assault by saying...'blind?, you can see bloody well enough to pick something up!@
he didnt nexessarily have to be a wheelchair user to react this way, he just happened to be.
as i said ... it's general intolerance0 -
Presume you also have an alert badge advising that you have medical oxygen on board, so really shouldn't be questioned at all. It must be awful to have people looking and muttering all the time and feeling the need to justify yourself when you really shouldn't have to.
I've never heard of one of these. Do you have a link and a reason for such a badge.0 -

Jannine, hope your little one is ok. I'm sure you know Alder Hey will do their best for your little girl - they've always been good with my son. I don't know how close to the hospital you live, but don't forget that you can request a room at Ronald MacDonald House if you need to. I know it isn't guaranteed, but if you do get a room, at least you will be able to lie down in a proper bed, cook food, etc.
Take care x0 -
I too have an expensive motor car - a 6 month old Mercedes C350CDI.
I also have a BB and have had many question my parking it and my previous car in a disabled space.
I just simply tell them that it is a wider bay which means I won't get my car scratched with the likes of you and your trolley! And then walk off!0 -
I'm not expecting a gold star or anything, but I was at a retail park today with my mum and her BB. We parked on one side, went into a couple of shops, then had to go to one of the shops on the other side. As I switched off the engine after pulling into the last empty disabled bay on that side, she said "Of course, I don't have to come in with you, do I?"
:mad::mad: "No mother, you don't, but if you're NOT coming in with me I need to move the car because it's not fair to someone who NEEDS it!"
Heck, if I'd known she didn't want to come in with me, I'd have left her getting into the car (she doesn't need help, it just takes a while!) while I nipped across the car park and got what we needed from the far side! Would have been faster ...Signature removed for peace of mind0
