I have applied for a blue badge for my son but I'm not sure if he will get one or not.

    That made me laugh, too!

Following on some of other discussions about BB - My Dad's new BB has just come through. In his new book it says - "It is a criminal offence to misuse a badge. This includes people other than the badge holder taking advantage of the parking concessions provided under the scheme" - I assume this applies to parking on the road or not paying in council-run car parks rather than parking on private land like shops' car parks.

Also - "You should not use the badge to allow non-disabled people to take advantage of the benefits while you sit in the car."

The "should" in that sentence suggests it's illegal but then it adds - "Although it is not illegal for a badge holder, or a non-disabled person waiting for the badge holder to return, to remain in the vehicle while the BB is displayed, consideration should be given to using a car park whenever possible."

Should is a get out word because they can't say 'must not'. A bit like me saying I should do the ironing ;)
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

I know this isn't relevant to the thread but I will mention it here anyhow.
I saw a baby in a pram on oxygen the other week and her mother was smoking over her. It really upset me.

I have a nightmare with smokers as well! When my daughter was discharged from the NICU, we had to walk through a cloud of smoke to get her to the car, I was horrified at the inconsideration of the smokers who seeing as it was raining decided to stand in the foyer of the unit that houses the NICU, Maternity Ward etc. They could see we had a very small baby on oxygen yet carried on puffing away.

  • I am frequently in that situation but if I leave my companion in the car it would only be for a matter of minutes because of one of their disabilities. A bay near where I am going is essential so that they can see whereabouts I am and for speed. There is also the chance that they may change their mind and accompany me. I ensure the badge is on display during the quick dash. If the space was needed by someone else - no other bays vacant, for example, I would reassess the situation.

One thing people should consider is that someone they see skipping out of a car may be picking someone up.

The handiest thing I have found with disabled bays is proximity to shelter from the rain. While I can navigate a wheelchair around to ramped areas quite easily, it is vital that my charge stays dry.
My daughter has physical and learning disabilities and when I park in the disabled bay(hopefully by the shopfront), she sometimes won't get out / is asleep again, so I dash in and keep my eye on her.She has woken and needed the loo at these times ,so I help her out of the car and escort her to the nearest one.
I've never had strangers question my parking in a BB space, but had a bit of a fright once in a supermarket carpark. There were no BB spaces left, so parked in a nearly empty area-only to find there were cars on either side on our return.I could squeeze in but couldn't get daughter in. What to do? She had an appointment at the hospital in 15 mins.In desperation, I looked around for a likely -looking helper, and spotted an elderly couple walking slowly(good) back to their car.I asked them to hold my daughters hand whilst I reversed out enough to get her into her childseat. No worries. But I got beeped at by an eejit in a hurry ....
